He knows his [expletive]. The man is prepared.

I didn't hear that bit, but the part about quarterbacks was the most interesting to me. I think it was every QB that's arrived in the last 8 years and made 40+ starts was drafted in the top 3 rounds.

He said something prior to the draft that drafting a quarterback was pointless because late picks don't wind up doing anything in the league. And all the talk about the new guy is that he can be a backup. So, it seems a little weird that they appear to have purposefully spent that draft pick on a guy they believe will always just be a backup.

Unfortunately, being Jay Cutlers backup has become a very important position for the Bears.

After that answer they asked him specifically about Fales, and he said it was for competition and depth that they felt was important. He didn't talk up Fales or his ability to buck that trend at all, so at the very least it seems like that was the goal, to draft a backup to make sure QB #2 was as strong as possible.

That is interesting, but isn't some of that to be expected irrespective of performance? There's definitely some "We drafted this guy high because we believe in him, and we'll take our chances with him" that goes on.

After all, this list does include some stinkers.

I really liked this analysis FO put together -- especially the breakdown of QBs by draft round over time.

Forte and his teammates were quite upset at his ranking on twitter. Definitely will be used as a motivation this year.

That ranking is [expletive] ridiculous. Forte was one of the 10 best players in the NFL last season.

what in the ever loving eff?

Fine, perhaps I should have written "one of the 20 best..."

Point is that he is way better than he is apparently perceived to be.

So the NFL top 100 is on. #81-90. Eddie Lacy and Reggie Bush were in this group. Forte was #91. Adrian Peterson is obviously somewhere on this list. So NFL players who voted on this list think Forte is the worst starting RB in the NFC North. As an additional reference, Demarco Murray is also ahead of Forte.

It's not that they dislike him, it's just that he's so [expletive] easy to tackle.

True stat: Matt Forte was tackled or went out of bounds in all but 9 of his carries last season.

My view, at least, is that late rounds is the perfect time to get a good, young backup who you can develop as a backup and have control of cheaply for an extended period. Especially in today's NFL, having a quality backup is critical and being able to develop one is that much moreso.

And this was the perfect draft to get that QB. The top wasn't that strong, but the depth was very good.

I thought Heban showed some real promise as a safety last season despite playing on a horrid defense. Interested to see if he can actually get a shot at training camp.

Not everyone is Adrian Peterson, nor do they need to be. Per PFO, Matt Forte was ranked 4th in total RB value (DYAR) in the whole league last season. Peterson was 25th.

@mikecwright: A couple quick takes from rookie minicamp practice: K. Carey certainly doesn't look slow; not one bit. P Pat O'Donnell has a big leg.

@AdamHoge: Christian Jones said he’ll be working primarily at strong side linebacker. #Bears

@mikecwright: Vets Kyle Long and Jordan Mills attended the workout to help out the rookie OLs. Robbie Gould was there, too.

@mikecwright: Speaking of O'Donnell, he bounced quite a few of his punts off the ceiling inside the Walter Payton Center.

@mikecwright: Was a tad surprised that Jordan Lynch totally looked the part as a running back.

@mikecwright: David Fales was up and down, which is expected from a rookie. Did some good things though.

@mikecwright: When I say O'Donnell bounced quite a few off the ceiling. I only saw maybe 3 or 4 punts all day that actually didn't hit the ceiling.

@mikecwright: Mel Tucker said there are some changes to the scheme and "alternative fronts" the Bears will play next season.

@AdamHoge: There will be packages used with certain personnel on defense. #Bears

@greggabe: Can't tell a lot from 1 rookie practice, but look for a lot if schematic changes on Bears defense this year
