And Bryant is a top 10 prospect in the minors with maybe the best power potential of any talent. I'd hope he projects higher than Lawrie, at least at the plate.

Lawrie went .353/.415/.661 at an age where Bryant was still pickin goobers in college. Things don't always work out how you plan.

I think he is the greatest thing. But the odds he hits (high) and fields at third (low to medium?) is enough to make me think we don't turn down as asset just because he exists.

i'm not saying turn him down, just get your pitchers first

Brett Lawrie could then be exchanged for good pitchers and services.

D-Backs exploring pitching options

The Diamondbacks, deep in young infielders and starting pitchers, possess enough prospect power to trade for virtually any starter they want. So, while they’re still talking to the Cubs about right-hander Jeff Samardzija, they’re also looking into other possibilities.

The trade market for starters looks rather vast, including or potentially including the following:

Rays lefty David Price.

Tigers righties Max Scherzer, Doug Fister and Rick Porcello.

Reds righty Homer Bailey.

Red Sox righty John Lackey.

Athletics lefty Brett Anderson.

Marlins righties Jacob Turner and Nate Eovaldi and some of the team’s younger prospects.

Brewers righties Kyle Lohse and Yovani Gallardo.

The D-Backs, sources say, know what it would take to land Samardzija, a pitcher they have targeted since last summer. Their fear is that if they jump too soon, they may miss out on an even better opportunity.

The Cubs are drawing numerous inquiries on Samardzija, but other teams also are sorting through their trade and free-agent options, and no deal appears imminent, sources say.

The Blue Jays, one possible suitor, might be reluctant to part with young pitching again after going down that path last offseason in trades with the Mets (R.A. Dickey) and Marlins (Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, et al). Samardzija is under control for two more years, and if the Cubs cannot sign him to an extension, why would anyone expect that the Blue Jays could pull off such a thing?

The Angels, who have an obvious need for a pitcher such as Samardzija, do not match up with the Cubs, sources said. The Cubs want young starting pitching and the Angels don’t have it, outside of righty Garrett Richards, who projects to be a key member of their rotation.

Anybody know or seen insight into how the front office is pitching Samardzija in terms of comps? Is it out of the realm of hope to think Samardzija can put it together the way Scherzer has? Without digging too deep into advanced metrics the first 3 years of starts for both of these guys at basically the same ages looks pretty familiar. I'm curious to think if anybody here thinks he make that step.

I think if you're looking for a visual example, then Scherzer is an okay comp. He hovered as a 3 win pitcher for 3 seasons before breaking out and then again in 2013. Both are power pitchers with fastball heavy repertoires that rely on their stuff and K a lot of guys.

That said, I don't think GMs are needing to be "sold" on Samardzija like he's a car on the lot. The price for him implicitly sets his value, and I have little doubt it's currently set higher than Samardzija's value based only on his performance to date.

Source: 99 percent Cubs' Samardzija will be moved by Opening Day

http://www.csnchicago.com/cubs/source-99-percent-cubs-samardzija-will-be-moved-opening-day

The Cubs are shopping starter Jeff Samardzija and as many as eight teams have shown considerable interest in landing the right-hander, who is not eligible for free agency until after the 2015 season. The front office has had discussions with Samardzija's camp regarding a long-term contract extension, but the two sides are far apart financially.

On Wednesday, major league sources who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed to me that the front runners to land Samardzija in a trade are the Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles and Arizona Diamondbacks, with the price according to one evaluator being extremely significant.

"I don't see him throwing another pitch in a Cubs uniform. I think it's 99 percent that he gets moved. They're not ready to win and he brings you the young pitching you need for the future," said a major league source.

Remaining hopeful for something like Shark & Schierholtz for Bradley, Delgado, and Eaton. Don't let me down this time, Towers.

I can't imagine a scenario where I'm happy with the return from the Blue Jays

Was just reading their SBN site where the debate was whether they could get Samardzija without including Sanchez or Stroman. Given what's transpired so far this offseason, I'm wondering what piece of significance they'd need to add to Sanchez and Stroman. But I agree, they have lots of interesting pieces, but it seems unlikely that I'd be super excited about the return. Not as bad as the Nationals, but no Arizona or Kansas City in terms of potential matches.

You're really not high on Giolito, eh (not that there's anything wrong with that)?

On the continuum of high ceiling pitching prospects that could be available(Taillon, Bradley, Ventura, etc), Giolito is by far my least favorite, because he's done so little professionally and is so far away from MLB. I like him just fine, but the problem more than that is there's no additional piece the Nationals can send that I'd be interested with Giolito unless they decided to deal Rendon. The Nationals system is all old pitchers and toolsy outfielders with performance risks, there's no Stroman/Nolin, no Skaggs/Holmberg, no Duffy/Zimmer, etc. Add in that Giolito is at the bottom of the totem pole for that category of targets and the fact that the Nationals likely value him far more than I do, and it doesn't make for a great match.

I don't know if JaysJournal is their SBN site, but their article on it was hilarious. After like 1,000 words on it, he decided on RHP Kyle Drabek, OF Anthony Gose, LHP Sean Nolin, LHP Daniel Norris, LHP Tyler Ybarra, SS Richard Urena for Samardzija.

And then they could trade some other pitching prospect and Moises Sierra for Castro.

What's wrong with AJ Cole?

I like the 3 LHPs, but all are 3rd pieces. And if u have to give up six guys...they probably aren't that good. I hate Gose though. Don't want him taking ABs and a roster spot from someone like Gentry or other more valuable players we've heard so far.

Loxas mentioned Arizona trying to pull the Pirates in by offering a SS. Maybe Owings or Gregorius for Glasnow possibly? Then Arizona send us Glasnow along with Delgado or Skaggs and Holmberg? I just refuse to get my hopes up on Bradley....
