When Shark signed his original 5/10 deal, he had a full NTC. When the Cubs declined his 2012 option and went to arb with him, it voided the NTC.

@BenBadler 2h

Blue Jays have plenty of lower-level guys to add as secondary trade chips: DJ Davis, Mitch Nay, Dawel Lugo, Alberto Tirado, Richard Urena.

Another Blue Jays name to watch in trade talks is Tyler Ybarra. Lefty up to 96, plus life, above-average breaking stuff, control issues.

Am I crazy or didn't Samardzija have a NTC?

Or am I just thinking of how he was insisting on one in an extension?

You're thinking of the extension.

his original five year contract after he got drafted had one too.

That's right.

No one cares about low level players who fill out the back of a mediocre top 10, Ben Badler.

I'd want Sanchez, Stroman, and Nolin for Samardzija if we're dealing with the Jays. Rasmus would be interesting but it seems like there's way too many ways for that to go wrong and wrong quickly by going down the road of including him in that deal.

Is Blue Jays crazy enough to offer Lawrie for Shark?

Yeah, I could see him being on the table. Even if he is though, I think we'd prefer young arms as the main return.

Are the* ... Pet peeve...

The Jays best prospects are overwhelming pitchers, I'd love to take 2-3 off their hands with a decent low value high upside guy. As for Rasmus, he might be interesting in a three way deal where we flip him for a solid higher end SP prospect and settle for Toronto pitching prospects outside outside Sanchez/Stroman. Of course, you'd need to have the Rasmus flip in place before pulling the trigger.

I don't object acquiring and keeping Rasmus, but not at the expense of acquiring significant pitching pieces

I'd take Lawrie over any 3 Jays prospects

Really? Outside of his initial run, he's been pretty pedestrian. Couple that with us being loaded with longterm options at 2B and 3B, I see better options for us from them. Unless you just REALLY don't like their young pitching....

He also hasn't turned 24 yet.

I'd definitely take Lawrie, especially if they are down on him. Shark and Barney for Lawrie, Sanchez and Stroman? Move the Valbuena/Murphy platoon to 2B until Baez shows up and call it an offseason for the infield.

Olt is more intriguing to me than Lawrie, and we already have Olt.

Well sure, if you get Sanchez and Stroman as well. I was thinking more in terms of a one for one swap or close to it. That deal is waaaay too good to be true.

I like Olt quite a bit, but I'm much more confident Lawrie has at least a productive ML career than Olt does, who it couldn't exactly be a shock at this point if he never got another ML at bat.

You should take a look at Lawrie's background. He's 18 months younger and has about 1100 MLB PAs on Olt.

I know a guy who knows a guy that played in the minors with Rasmus. Said he was a douche, might be [expletive] and likes to freestyle his own raps

Lawrie's star has dimmed into a still productive player at the major league level. Olt's star dimmed to disastrous levels as a too-old player in AAA. I'll take Lawrie.

Based on one disastrous season.

One disastrous season when it's Olt's only time at AAA and he turns 26 next season is a pretty big deal, even if there are fixable explanations for it. Again, Olt is interesting, I think he's a valuable player to have if his eyesight is sorted out, but relative to Lawrie he doesn't carry as much value.

We have too many options at third to make Lawrie a target unless he comes with a couple of their top 100 pitchers.
