One concern was holding velo, both late in games and late in the season. He passed both those tests. Granted, it was not a full season from him, with his suspension. He's always had a nice mix of pitches, fastball, cutter, slider, curve, and change. He's getting lots of misses, so his plane has been good enough so far. I'm not completely confident, but I feel much better than this time last year anyway.

David Kaplan of CSN Chicago reports that the Cubs have discussed a multi-year contract extension with Jeff Samardzija.

Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer indicated that the organization likes Samardzija and wants to keep him, and the feeling is believed to be mutual. The 28-year-old right-hander registered a 4.34 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 214/78 K/BB ratio over 213 2/3 innings in 2013.

Unless he's traded soon, this could be a wilder winter roller coaster than Roberts, Peavy, and Garza.

You're right, there's been a whole 3 pages on a dying message board about this...it's going to surpass those behemoths in no time.

If we do trade him, I hope it's soon. His salary for 2014 could give a trading team plenty of flexibility to make another impact type move as well. Which could increase his value a bit. I don't want another 3 months of drawn out crap, get him extended or trade him. Hell, it gives us a known direction as well. Just do something with him.

From one of my sources: Colby Rasmus' name has come up in the negotiations on Samardzija. Rasmus is arbitration eligible and will be a free agent after the 2014 season, but the Cubs have interest in locking him up and if the discussions on Samardzija progress, the Cubs may ask for a window to offer/negotiate an extension of 2 or 3 years.

Holy [expletive]...Colby Rasmus was a damn near 5 win player in 118 games this year?

Yeah, no [expletive]. Had no idea he had such a solid season. I'd want longer than a 2-3 year extension though, if I'm trading for him though. At least if the 2016 stuff is true. Plus, I'd still prefer Arizona or Pittsburgh as a Shark trading partner to Toronto. Even if Archie or Taillon aren't included.

Rather get better prospects than Rasmus, unless it can be worked out as separate trades. Cubs add whatever theyd reasonably want for Rasmus abd agree on a package for Shark.

Yeah, I had no idea he performed like that. I nearly did a double-take looking him up.

Isn't Rasmus thought to be a legit asshat? If our guys value big makeup as much as it seems, he's likely not that high of a priority.

Im referring to the situation, the potential impact on the franchise, and fan base reactions.

You're thinking in terms of a message board at a time when fans are nowhere near as enthusiastic as they were between the pre 2008-2009 offseasons or as hopeful for a quick-ish turnaround as pre-2012.

I know a guy who knows a guy that played in the minors with Rasmus. Said he was a douche, might be [expletive] and likes to freestyle his own raps Edited by Bunts Lick Butts

Rasmus seems pretty volatile in terms of performance.

what would we be starting at, Sanchez and Stroman minimum?

I'd hope you'd get both. I'd take Hutchison as a replacement for either myself. Depending on how much value they've lost, Gose or Drabek as a 3rd piece would be nice. They've also got plenty of low level, high upside types they could use.

Am I crazy or didn't Samardzija have a NTC?

Or am I just thinking of how he was insisting on one in an extension?

I think his dad was the bigger asshat, but he's no peach either.

ABTY:

I still don't understand the 'they're trying to get something done by [blank]' statements... Unless there is a deadline or a move that is a prereq to another, these teams are always trying to get something done... Just silly...

Anyways, as of an hour ago the Jays are no closer to a Shark deal than are the Bucs, D'Backs, Nationals, Royals or Yankees...

He did. It ended after his original 5 year deal was up after 2011.

I'd take satan himself if he was good at baseball. The Cubs need more guys who are good at baseball, douchebags or not. IDK if trading Shark for him is wise or not though.

I'd much prefer Sanchez/Stroman to one of them plus Hutchinson and a third part.

You're thinking of the extension.
