@davidkaplanshow: Theo on how tough the @Cubs $ situation is: biggest driver of baseball financials is these massive TV deals. That will soon be in our favor.

My white boner is rising.

is this the first time he's said a tv deal will be "soon", or was that a vague kind of term he throws around?
Posted
No, I don't think he would flippantly refer to that as soon if he didn't mean it.
Posted
Normally i'd assume "soon" just means WGN expiring after 2014, but given the recent smoke i'd lean towards it being something a little more than that.

Even without the smoke, using the term "massive" on just the 2015-2019 WGN portion would seem overkill.

Even disappointing terms on a WGN only deal would still be like an increase of tens of millions in revenue per year.

To me, that's not massive, especially given the context.

My expectations with a WGN only deal were maybe 35M or so more a year.

IT'S STILL GONNA HAPPEN.

I think it will. Too much smoke lately about TV deals and Cubs talking with Fox, and that'd put us right in between Philadelphia and LA, so it feels appropriate.

For the 70 WGN games, that's still like $80m or $90m more per year than we get now. It'd be huge.

Yeah, joking aside, I genuinely believe that this is something that is either done or is close to being done. There's just WAY too much talk about it all over the place for it to just be a wild run out of control. Even the Cubs are talking like they're expecting it.

how was your date?

how was your date?

Made the same mistake I always make. Went for someone slightly better looking than me at the expense of any shred of compatibility. Bored out of my mind and would rather have been home internetting and refreshing for Tanaka rumors.

RESULT NOT PROCESS. you didn't miss anything on the tanaka front.

Obviously not as done as we'd hoped, but the rumor earlier in the week was specifically a TV deal with Fox worth $1.7m-$1.85m/game for a total of $4b to $6b over the life of it.

I want it. I want it hard.

Im sorry, this doesn't normally happen but I'm distracted.

Long term is the only term.

This is where alcohol really helps push the evening into a more desirable situation.

Did you tell her that?

So, does this mean they're buying out CSN, or can we assume they are getting that much for the 70 WGN games through 2019 and in 2020 that will be getting that amount for the full slate of games (about 150)?

If it's not a buy out we're looking at $159-179M through 2019 and $255-277M after 2019.

Should note here, MLB is only letting the Dodgers keep $6B of their $8.5B. The rest is going to the rest of the league.

PS: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
