AJ Burnett has decided to pitch another year. He should definitely be a target. He could be a pretty good flip at the deadline.

Wasn't he dead set on going to Pittsburgh?

Either way, I'm sure he'd have a wealth of options and don't see why he'd come here.

He's backed off the Pirates thing, apparently.

And yeah, I'm sure there would be plenty of other teams in on him. But we should use that Tanaka money on something, even if it's not quite as efficient as we'd like.

Could see him going to the Angels or Mariners

Honestly, if we have 20 mill left to spend, I'd rather spread it around. Spend another 2 on IFA that have yet to be signed, maybe 10 per year combined on Hammel(1 yr plus option) and Yoon(3-12ish) and get Iglesias.

37 year olds who are good at baseball, coming back for one more year don't sign with one of the worst teams in baseball.

37 year olds wanting 8 figures may not have much of a market in February.

Or they may have quite a large one, since plenty of teams are still looking for good SP.

The Orioles, Blue Jays, Angels, Mariners, and Diamondbacks are all actively looking, with the Yankees, Indians, and Dodgers in the market too, for the right guy.

With just 2 guys that cost a draft pick and Bronson Arroyo on the market, as far as guys that can be considered mid rotation types.

I seriously would put the Cubs at about 29th on Burnett's wish list ahead of the Astros and Yankees but behind retirement.

You like Hammel? I just don't see it with him. Rather have Maholm.

I think I like him the most of the FA pitchers we likely would target if we were to add one through FA.

Yeah, I think the market will be real good for him. No draft pick compensation and likely will be willing to take a one-year deal. That's a nice combo for a contending team.

I don't LIKE him, but if Bosio can get his GB rate back to where it used to be, I think he's got a better chance to get us something decent at the deadline than Maholm likely will.

Marlin Bystro made a random comment on PSD asking if Jason Hammel changes our win variance at all. Might be sarcasm from him or something but i'd wager we probably signed him.

That'd make us about a win better than we are now. I guess I'll take it.

Did Villanueva get into a gasoline fight accident and I missed it? I won't really be upset if they add another starter, but I don't get the laments from the Baker thread or the idea that Hammel really makes the team immediately better.

Hammel > Villanueva > Baker

Last three years, which I think is the most favorable cutoff for Villanueva I can get, 2.9 fWAR. Hammel 4.7.

It's not a massive alligator mouth, but it's clearly there.

Our teacher called them foxes

It's completely possible Villanueva gets a rotation spot if we sign Hammel when Rusin/Arrieta are the two other top contenders for the 4/5 spots

Unless he gets hurt, Arrieta is more or less written in at this point. The fifth spot is all that's open.

The value in Hammel or other signings is the ability to flip them later in the year. Not how many wins they might add.

It's hard to argue with FO on this over the last 2 years.

I think it's not impossible to think that anyone on the staff will be dealt.

I really don't see Wood going anywhere, but all others could be gone. Which is another reason we might still sign multiple starters.

I can't wait for the day that we can discuss acquiring players that will help the team instead of how soon we can flip them.
