ABTY:

This is where I think people are getting things a little twisted. Some reading between the lines is required: they put out there that they will acquire pitching, pitching and more pitching while 'taking a a different approach' to acquiring postional talent. They have also said publicly that they do not plan to obtain any talent that they plan to flip at the deadline- everything for here on out is for the now and the future. All that said, they've also made it clear that they will not be big players in multiple FA's. So what does that leave? Well, a.) Tanaka is the prime target- the team has had conversation (back channeled) to gage Tanaka's willingness to play for the Cubs (it's said that he is extremely interested) why does this matter? New posting rules will allow the player to select which team he wants to negotiate with as long as said team is within the top 3 bids. The Cubs will most definitely be in the top 3. Tanaka will require a significant monetary obligation, however if the Cubs don't land him, don't expect the team to push said money towards a Garza reunion or pull an EJAX and go big on a Ricky Nolasco or any other top level FA starter, instead expect a major push in the trade market. Anyway, don't want to go to far down the rabbit hole just yet just wanted to point out that reading Theo's comments as '13/14 offseason will be a repeat on 12 without the Jackson signing' (which I'm not saying you interpreted it as but many have) is likely very wrong...

Cubs plan to target Jhonny Peralta...

Edit: not sure how high on the priority list he falls- conflicting info on which player is top target for 3B...

Pursuing Peralta to play 3B is confusing on several different levels.

But signing him to play SS after trading Starlin Castro is classic Theo.

It certainly makes more sense than fighting a bear SS market to sign him and move him down the defensive spectrum.

I think these are all Theo quotes from the STH meetings, not a fresh interview or anything, but dang:

In our situation, where we have to make every asset count and every dollar count and we don’t want to get in our own way with our development plan … The possibility of trading significant assets so you can then acquire someone and then reward him with a nine-figure contract is not as appealing as keeping your core prospects if they’re guys you really believe in, and then at the right time adding that impact piece from outside the organization. … Now that said, we’re going to pursue trades. We’re going to look at trades for some of the very best players in the game. You never know what you might be able to come up with.

Translation: no Price, no Carlos Gonzalez, no Stanton, unless they just give them away to us

We wish there were a free-agent market for young players, but there’s not. Every now and then a situation pops up and you can kind of harbor all your resources for that one guy and it might make sense. But we’re playing against the big boys, too. And there’s a lot of money out there.

Translation: We look forward to making a due-diligence bid with no real chance of landing Tanaka.

Or...no Price, no Stanton, maybe Carlos Gonzalez and maybe some other guys not mentioned.

Or...there are some major players out there, but we're going all-in on Tanaka. I know how Cubs fans can get so I don't want to say what our chances are. All I can say is we are going to do everything we can to get our guy.

Two new rumors out of Orlando:

(1) The Mets have asked the Cubs about Castro. Players discussed supposedly include prospects Rafael Montero and Brandon Nimmo, and major leaguer Daniel Murphy.

(2) The Nationals have asked the Cubs about Samardzija. Prospects dicussed supposedly include AJ Cole and Eury Perez.

Seattle front office met with Hoyer this morning to talk about some of the Cubs major league position players. Speculation from my source is that the discussion was about Castro. No confirmation from other sources.

Seattle is probably my favorite Castro destination if they're dead set on trading him. Lots of interesting pieces there.

I still don't get trading Castro this off-season. One bounce-back year and his value is almost completely restored. One more flat year and his value is largely unchanged. There is no urgency to move him for the 2014 season, so I really hope they don't sell low because it makes no sense to do so.

Taijuan Walker plz

I'd love for Seattle to be wanting Castro, but I'm not sure Miller isn't going to perform just as well as Castro moving forward. And they're young at 2B and 3B as well.

Wonder if we can buy low on Ackley? I agree TT. I was hoping Seattle would get in the mix for either Castro or Shark.

Maybe the general feeling around the league is that Castro is still a very good asset/will be a very good to elite player and Theo/Jed are gauging the interest just to see what they could get. Maybe they feel Castro is trending downward and no longer a very good asset/the chances of him becoming very good or elite aren't all that great and they would be willing to sell him off high while some teams still really value him.

After all of these Castro rumors, we had better trade him because I'm sure the rumors are really going to affect his confidence. Going from signing a long-term committment and hiring a Spanish speaking manager to seeing your name in trade rumors has to mess with the confidence level of a young player oming off a bad season.
