Someone refresh my memory who is Addison Russell?

Oakland's top prospect. 19-year old SS in A+, current slash line of .277 / .373 / .514 with an 11% BB rate. No idea how good his defense is, but his fielding % seems pretty high for a 19-year old shortstop (.969).

A's SS prospect, 11th pick in last year's draft, out of high school. Currently in high A, similar path as Almora but without the hamate injury delay.

I don't know about same path since Russell has spent the whole year at high-A, unlike Almora who won't get there till 2014.

Similar enough to where I'd expect Almora would be without the lost injury time this season.

BA preview:

MESA SOLAR SOX

Top Prospects: Kris Bryant, 3b, Cubs; Addison Russell, ss, Athletics; Javier Baez, ss, Cubs; Albert Almora, of, Cubs.

Frankly this is a ridiculous assemblage of talent for Mesa, which should have some “can you top this” moments in batting practice. Baez, Bryant and Cubs outfielder Jorge Soler rank among the minors’ true elite power hitters, and Russell ranks on the short list of the game’s top middle-infield prospects.

Making Up For Lost Time: Arodys Vizcaino, rhp, Cubs; Sammy Solis, lhp, Nationals.

Vizcaino entered the the year as the Cubs’ top pitching prospect, but the oft-injured righthander is coming off Tommy John surgery. So is Solis, who at least has pitched this season on a monitored schedule with high Class A Potomac.

Rule 5 Watch: Dallas Beeler, rhp, Cubs.

Chicago’s farm system is deep, but there should be room for a righthander who has flashed plus stuff. Beeler will have to be healthy, as he’s missed most of the season with a torn finger tendon, not pitching since May. Righty Matt Loosen, his teammate this year at Double-A Tennessee, also will be watched after a disastrous stretch (15 homers, 6.53 ERA with the Smokies)

I find it sort of ... odd ... that I'm saying this, considering I've said positive things about Beeler and Loosen in the past (and in the case of Loosen, as recently as last year), but I'm just not sure what's so exciting about them to get noted like that. I don't have the Mesa staff in front of me, so maybe it's the best of the Rule 5 possibilities. I think Beeler has a shot as a starter, but much as I argued that Loosen was intriguing enough last winter, in my gut of guts, he feels like a pen arm, despite solid fb velo and 4 average to slightly better than average pitches.

If Soler was playing the whole season with the shin injury, then doesnt that make his stats a bit more impressive? Or does it not work like that?

Javier Baez has been scratched from the AFL. Nothing sinister:

@CarrieMuskat: #Cubs GM Hoyer says Baez "emotionally and physically drained" after long season. Agreed best to rest

Hopefully they take Almora off the taxi squad. Way more important that he and Soler get extra reps.

Of all the guys available Baez is the one that least needs the exposure/playing time.

Yeah, if anything, that whole thing seemed like lets show off all our toys.

Arodys Vizcaino now not going either.

@MDGonzales: Vizcaino now will be assigned to Instructional League instead so Cubs can better manage his rehab schedule.

I understand the thought process there for sure.

Sucks - I was really looking forward to seeing Baez and Vizcaino when I go in November.

I don't mind Baez. He did enough this year.

Vizcaino, on the other hand - I understand the thought process, but I also can't help but wonder if there's something more to it, given the setbacks this season.

On Vizcaino doesnt sound good. I think he's ready for the glue factory.

My guess is that Vizcaino's stuff hasn't come back, and the Cubs want to hide him from the rest of the baseball world as he throws in the 80'swith no command.

They probably wouldn't have even selected him for the AFL last month if that were the case.

i'm not really sure what the motivation would be to "hide him from the rest of baseball." it's not like he has much trade value at the moment.

Jason McLeod is in the WGN booth right now with Len and JD and said Soler is on track to play in the AFL.
