Given that the best pitcher in the world just got 7/$215, a 7/$182 contract for a far less proven pitcher seems insane to me.

I'm not eve n saying I'd be mad about it. Just that it seems insane.

Kershaw was buying out an arbitration year *and* got a very player-friendly opt-out. If he was getting straight FA cash, he'd have gotten more.

don't want him at over 20 mil per year

Seems like a huge risk to me, at that price. Not every player that jumps has the impact of Ichiro...there's been quite a few, expensive, flameouts.

Sure. But what are we going to do with that $25m that isn't risk?

Save it for the next time a really good 25 year old who plays our biggest organizational position of need hits the fa market

You're always assuming risk, but assuming risk on a player that's put up numbers in MLB and assuming risk on a player that never has is different.

I think Tanaka is going to be a great player, but it's hard to argue that any of us know that for sure. He's never pitched a season in MLB, so there's inherently more risk to sign him than to sign a known commodity. That said, there's more upside as well and a team doesn't have to give up a draft pick to sign him.

I'm simply saying that if Tanaka comes over and ends up being a journeyman level pitcher, $20M is a lot to swallow.

"Never played in MLB" only bothers me for hitters. It's hard to see how they'll react to better stuff.

Tanaka's a pitcher. They know *exactly* how hard he throws, exactly how consistently he hits his location, and exactly how much movement he has on his pitches. I bet they can do a pretty good job of figuring out how that projects in MLB.

Without knowing ANYTHING about the process, if the Cubs are the first team to submit an actual offer, possibly have the numbers leaked, I honestly can't see that as a good thing.

The Dodgers have Greinke with an opt out in a couple of years and the Yanks truly have a need currently. Hopefully, it's a situation where every team had to submit their offers on the same day and he's choosing over the weekend. I don't want to be the team that makes the Yanks or Dodgers pay more than they wanted to.

That's a distinct possibility, but I can't imagine teams have waited this long to make any sort of formal offer. You can't risk some other team offering and getting him to sign right there.

Casey Close is considered a very fair agent. I just hope Tanaka doesn't tell him he'll play for the highest bidder, but make sure so and so knows what the high bid is.

On the other hand, there have been enough pitching busts to make one think maybe that's not true, either.

Just pointing it out. Nothing more.

I'm surprised everyone is brushing off 7/182 like "what else are we gonna do with it" when King Felix got LESS, and a lot of different people here [expletive] their pants at the notion of giving that amount of money to a dreaded pitcher

never ever ever give a pitcher a seven year, $25M per deal.

ever

Pitching busts as large contracts, or pitching busts coming over from Japan? The former, sure, that's the nature of having to add pitchers externally. The latter, not at all. Even the poster boy for Japanese pitching busts, Dice-K, was a good pitcher that then had an arm injury, which brings us back to the former.

I hope they pay him even MORE than what's being reported.

On second glance, it appears it was just tim [expletive] his pants lmao.

I say give Tanaka the money, but man, Felix's deal was pretty SEISMIC (/david) when it happened, and it's like one offseason later and more than that is being attached to a guy some scouts are like "yeah he's a good mid-rotation guy."

Boo this man and all the other doubters.

Felix's deal was also really only a 5 year extension. His previous deal was set to pay him 39.5 million in 13-14, his new deal ripped that up but only pays him ~43 million in 13-14.

a potential TV deal could render any possible number moot, and if you have to pay it to get him, you have to pay it to get him.

Lol, that thread reminded me that Tim started begging for apologies after Hernandez reported an elbow issue early in the preseason. All he did after that was post his second-lowest WHIP of his career and his highest k/9 of his career, lowest walk rate, etc.

Eh, they kinda have to do it at this point, unfortunately.
