Meh, I wasn't overly excited about him. Then again, I wasn't overly excited about Puig, so watch him become an All Star and we can all bitch about another guy Theo let get away.

@JesseSanchezMLB: Source: Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo on track for record-setting 6-year, $72 million deal with #RedSox. Check http://t.co/0KJkX831bj

holy hell, I'm not gonna blame the FO for declining to outbid that.

12 mill isn't THAT much when you look at our payroll and how many cheap, pre-arb guys we have, with more coming. It'd have opened up more trade avenues for us as well. No idea how good he is, but he's basically got to be a league average starter to be worth the contract. We'll know whether to look back and bitch about this one midway thru next year probably.

I wonder how expensive it would be for the Cubs to get Jackie Bradley Jr or Mookie Betts.

While Bradley is an excellent CF, he is equally terrible at the plate. Friends in Boston tell me he hasn't learned to adjust to high fastballs. I think the Sox will probably try to deal him in the off season. I'd pass on him. We have Jr. Lake already.

Eh, not overly bummed with missed out at that price. He's already a little older and the price seemed to have been bumped up due to a Puig/Abreu premium with how those guys came into the league, while by most accounts he isn't on their level. I'd rather go after Markakis or Melky for less money likely or Tomas if we are spending this kind of money on a Cuban guy.

Yeah, I'd prefer the guy with more power who is 4 years younger.

Lake can't sniff Bradley's defense (in CF!) and OBP skills.

If we didn't have Alcantara, I might be upset about missing out on him. I was kind of hoping we'd get Castillo and then trade Alcantara for pitching, but for what Castillo's getting, I'd rather stick with Arismendy, who will probably end up being better anyway.

This seems like a drastic over pay! I bet we can find an outfielder to produce similar results for a lot less money!

More likely a guy who can produce 1/3 of the results for 1/8 of the money

Yea the reason I'm not terribly upset about missing out is that the offense really isn't a priority now for whatever the hell the FA dollars are. I'd much rather they focus that on pitching. I also wouldn't be surprised to see them in on Tomas, assuming the scouting checks out. I've gotten the impression this front office is really adverse to offering substantial long term deals to older players.

I'm just gonna tell myself they are holding out for they younger, more powerful Tomas so they didn't really make an effort on Castillo and this isn't a case of them cheaping out and/or wanting to make the most efficient signings again.

At this rate, Tomas will probably get $70-80 million.

What type of player do you think Castillo will be?

What type of player do you think the FO think he'll be? Were they in on him up to 8M/year to be a 4th-5th OF?

No, but I can understand the hesitation at giving him 70+ million if there's any concerns about his game translating(like there are statistically) and if his ceiling isn't much higher than a 2-3 win OF. Is that a 'drastic overpay' in that case? No. It's also not a sign of stinginess either.

Way to avoid the question

While we need to spend on pitching, hitting is still a need. A ton of the guys we are counting in haven't seen a big league pitch, have injury concerns, or have had struggles with the ML pitching they've seen. A starting caliber OF would go a long way. Hopefully it's addressed somewhere else in FA or trade.
