@sahadevsharma: Vibe I'm getting is Cubs aren't too interested in Yasmany Tomas. Price is gonna get crazy and they're not high enough on him to go there.

@sahadevsharma: One scout told me Tomas has a ton of swing-and-miss & his swing may need an overhaul to handle big league pitching. Restricted to a corner.

that second quote makes him seem like our FO's dream target

2B Jose Fernandez, one of the top remaining Cuban players, is missing. Obviously a chance he has defected.

The Cuban security apparatus sure isn't what it use to be. WTF, Sulley?

Jose Fernandez has defected.

In August, Ben Badler rated Fernandez the third best Cuban who hadn't defected, behind only Yulieski Gourriel and Alfredo Despaigne.

Can/has he played the OF, specifically CF?

Probably not. He's primarily a 2B whose dabbled at 3B.

That's too bad, because his offensive profile seems really intriguing. Just don't see us having any interest if he's strictly a IF.

According to LaRussa, if you can play the IF, you can play the OF.

Even if that's true I'm mostly interested in CF.

i don't think it's a coincidence that cuban players have started defecting in droves right when cuban ballplayers start getting tens of millions on the open market without ever having seen a major league pitch. a fine example of market incentive to rub in castro's eye.

is that really a new thing?

or are you differentiating between position players and pitchers here (i realize you said "seen a major league pitch")?

It kind of is new. Ever since international spending caps were put in place guys without caps have seemed to see a bump.

Yeah, it may be persception but it seems to me almost anybody can come over from Cuba and get a ton of money since they are the only unregulated group.

Yeah, it may be perspective but it seems to me almost anybody can come over from Cuba and get a ton of money since they are the only unregulated group.

What do you mean unregulated? They still have to fit the cutoffs to be exempt from the IFA rules.

Players from Cuba are essentially the only players that do fit those cutoffs. You aren't getting 26 year old Dominicans randomly popping up on the multi million dollar radar.
