Robert Murray ‏@RobertMurrayMLB A more recent offer, according to @CubsDen, was C Andrew Susac and RHP Ty Blach for Garza. #SFGiants

Robert Murray ‏@RobertMurrayMLB 11h The #SFGiants offered a deal to the #Cubs for Matt Garza, with Gary Brown as centerpiece, reports @CubsDen. The deal was rejected.

Susac's interesting; can't say I know much about Blach, aside from an insane K/BB.

No thanks to Gary Brown.

Where's Raisin to chime in?

Unless Crick is the centerpiece from the Giants, lol at them.

I disagree. The Giants have a couple of worthy pitching prospects besides their best in Crick. None of the teams the Cubs have been talking to have been willing to give up their best arm for him nor would I expect them to.

Clayton Blackburn would be the one I'm most interested in after Crick. But there's also Adalberto Mejia, Edwin Escobar and Ty Blach. I like Susac. A college catcher taken in the 2nd round in 2011, he's 23 and OPSing .844 with a .370 OBP in AA. He's thrown out 40% of baserunners this season. He's blocked by Posey so the Giants might be more willing to trade away a good catching prospect than some other teams and the Cubs could use one. If the Cubs could get Blackburn, Susac and one of those other pitchers (preferably Escobar) that would be a really good trade. They may have to give up more than Garza to get that, it all depends on how desperate the Giants are. But it goes to show that SF has some decent depth behind Crick.

That said, I'd much rather trade with the Pirates or Red Sox...

I like, don't love Blach. The command is obviously a big plus, but I wonder if the K's hold up the higher he goes. Perhaps it does, but I don't recall the scouting reports suggesting a plus secondary. I think Blach is something like 89-92 on the fastball, solid change, average/inconsistent breaking balls.

I think the Giants can put together a good deal even if Crick and Blackburn are out of it (hard to see them fork over either guy). It'd probably be on the low end of my realistic hopes in a trade, but with guys like Susac/Stratton/Mejia/Escobar/Blach/Kickham (not all of them), there's certainly enough guys to put together a decent deal. Susac/Blach alone wouldn't be enough, though. A ton of other teams rate as being more intriguing, though.

Unless something happens in the next several hours, Garza's next final start in a Cubs uniform will be against Tyler Skaggs. Any chance we can just swap starting pitchers with the D Backs before the game? :beg:

Sveum did say Garza would pitch tonight, so it's possible.

The only pitcher I'd trade straight up for Garza in the Arizona org would be Archie Bradley. I think Skaggs' stock has fallen a tad since last year. At least I think I've read stories about that, please ridicule me if I'm wrong.

His velocity is down a bit and he's definitely fallen down prospect lists.

Clay Buccholz is scheduled to see the one-and-only Dr. James Andrews for his neck/shoulder "discomfort." You'd think that Buccholz's questionable availability combined with the Rays' ongoing surge, which now has them only 1.5 GBs, would spur the Red Sox to be more willing to part with one (or several) of their more notable SP prospects. You'd think.

Maybe it's because the rumors haven't been specific so they haven't been able to shoot down the possibilities like Texas did, but Boston has my favorite combination of talent. If they could get Webster and one of Workman, Brentz, or Ranaudo, and maybe a minor third player, I'd be pretty pleased.

The other thing with the Red Sox is motivation. Beyond the obvious reasons, they have a ton of upper minors prospects to the point that they're going to have to make some really tough 40 man/Rule 5 decisions with guys like Brentz, Ranaudo, and Britton. Since Garza is the premier talent available between now and when they'd have to make those roster decisions, hopefully they'll be more willing to part with them to seal the deal.

On the other hand, this is the Red Sox, so I'm sure Lucchino has mandated that any deal for Garza also include Castro, Samardzija, and the naming rights to Wrigley.

Per Rotoworld:

Clay Buchholz (neck, shoulder) was told by Dr. James Andrews on Monday that he doesn't have any structural damage and is merely dealing with inflammation.

Good news for the Red Sox, as it confirms the initial diagnosis. Meanwhile, Buchholz finally has some peace of mind and will resume throwing as long as he can tolerate the discomfort. He won't be back until August at this point, but he could provide a big boost to the Red Sox down the stretch.

So Wood starts tonight, then, I assume?

Yeah, that had already been mentioned as the alternative.

@CubsDen Just heard deal may be for less players but better quality.

Don't you tease me, Arguello.
