While Ned Coletti deserves most of his bad rep, trading peanuts for Marmol and only having to pay him league minimum isn't a bad deal. There's a decent chance he becomes useful in the pen again. Even if it's a 1 in 3 chance, league min for 3 months is worth checking out

It's not a 1 in 3 chance, and the cost isn't the salary, it's the innings you waste finding out.

Yes.

what a dopey system. teams have to wait until the day that most high-profile IFA will sign to acquire enough money to sign those guys. who thought up this nonsense?

The system is stupid, to say the least. Most of the top guys already know where they're going to go. It sounds like the Cubs could get 4 large bonus guys. And currently only have the money to sign 2 of them, or one of the top 2, and the other 2. Bud is a moron. It would have been cool to see what Theo could have done with no spending limits on the draft and IFA's.

they want to limit the amount of trading that goes on. you can argue that it's a dumb end to pursue (though it is very much in keeping with the overall desire to limit amateur spending), but it's not just a dumb oversight that nobody thought to correct.

Luis Cruz is a special kind of awful.

Shawn Camp type of awful?

Yes. Roughly Starlin Castro levels of offer (including defense, evening out the playing time).

Oh, and by the way......Thanks Kyle. That comment made me finally go look up Castro, who I had done a great job of convincing myself, was his normal self. Negative one point [expletive] three. On the positive side, at least he's got talent and should bounce back. Luis Cruz though: .127/.175/.169 in 128 plate appearances.

well yes and no. It depends on the leverage of said innings. If they run his sorry ass out there in the ninth of one run ballgames then yes.

Looks like the return could be either Matt Guerrier or Peter Moylan, according to Dylan Hernandez. Baaically just a guy we're going to DFA shortly.

i always said the cubs needed more players from australia.

but really, as long as the return isn't a bad contract above the value of marmol's (and we're not run by abject morons, so it won't be), it's pretty much impossible to be upset at what comes back. everyone just assumed that marmol was gone and the cubs were eating the rest of the contract. if they save 50 bucks, hey great.

Exactly, well said.

Hahaha, Moylan is actually a lot worse than anyone we have in the pen right now. I didn't know that was possible.

I was about to say I'd rather take Moylan, since he was pretty excellent for the last several years. Then I looked up his injury history. He missed most of 2011 with a back issue and then in that offseason he was diagnosed with a torn labrum AND a torn rotator cuff. Ouch. Didn't make it back until September of last year. He performed admirably enough in short time, but yeah, it looks like it has caught up with him.

So I suppose Guerrier is the lesser of two evils here, in terms of potential usefulness. Honestly I don't care who either way. Like davell said, we're gonna end up DFA'ing one of them in short order anyways.

Then why allow the trading of IFA money at all? It's overly complicated stupidity

To further benefit the teams that don't want to spend, and provide a compromise for the teams that do want to spend.

The Cubs just acquired Houstons #2 and 3 slots for Ronald Torreyes.

those would be big slots, would they not?

Bleacher Nation says roughly 800k.
