I'm just trying to analyze the money situation. First pick slot is 6.7ish mill. I'll be disappointed as hell if Bryant requires all of that(or more). We have 10.5 millish total, plus a tad over 500k in overslot available. Which I certainly think we'll use all of.

My true guess is Bryant will get between 5.5 and 6 mill. If he gets more than Buxton got last year(6), we're overpaying. The slot value of 41 was around 1.35 or so, I think. Honestly, I doubt Zastryzny gets all of that. My guess is he gets around a mill.

But Buxton wasn't a Boras client.

- ESPNU breakdown of Bryant's swing from recently

Hoping to be a first-round pick, the Mizzou lefty still managed to go 35 spots higher than his draft ranking by Baseball America.

“If I would have gone in the first round, I would have gotten paid more or whatever,” he said. “But I’m glad. Because at 41, that means everyone passed over me. And now I have a reason to hate every other team in baseball. It worked out perfect.”

“I expect (the Cubs) to treat me fairly,” he said. “I’m willing to accept fair treatment. All signs point to me being gone. I’m excited to go. The Mizzou coaches and I talked about it. They didn’t expect me back. They just want what’s best. And I want what’s best. I had a great career there. I wouldn’t have changed a thing about it. Hopefully if all works out I’ll be a Chicago Cub.”

I anticipate we probably saved a little off slot off both guys ... but then again, Boras is going to push hard on Bryant and probably wait until the last day (so we might not have clarity on how much savings we have until late ... granted, I'm hoping they got a good feel for how much he would cost, but it's entirely possible they simply decided to pick based on talent), and the comments Zastryzny makes doesn't make it seem like he's going to give us a ton of savings. The mediocre class sort of sets up well in that, there's actually a fair amount of solid college talent that is still around that probably won't cost too much.

We've got another back yard batting cage:

His father, Mike, who spent two seasons in Boston's farm system in the 1980s, recognized the same thing and, along with Kris' mother, Susie, and an uncle, installed a batting cage in the family's backyard when Kris was 5. Bryant still hits in that cage when he goes home for the summer.

True, but didn't Boras and Appel want 6 last year from the Astros and they passed for Correa at 4.8? I just don't see Appel getting more than that this time around, nor do I see Bryant getting more than him.

Here's the tweet by Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano about his son Kyle heading to college:

@DaveSerranoUT: Well it's been a long night but Im happy to say @SerranoK34 is going to be a Vol. His dream will happen in 3 years. Still very proud!

Son of a bitch. Just realized the Yankees picked Gosuke Katoh. Thought he was one of the most likely of UCLA's recruits to make it to campus.

well what a crappy draft. I was hoping if they took Bryant that at least they took him at a deal and could overslot with this pick. *sigh*

well you're mad about everything

Well what happened to drafting impact guys? This guy has 5th starter written all over him.

Easy there turbo. Crappy draft???

Yeah a lot of lefty 5th starters touch 95 with their fastball.

Jon Denney please

That's what I'm sort of hoping for. If we save 1 mil on the first two picks (not unreasonable) and punt a few more picks, we should be able to put up a 2+ mil package with our 3rd round pick. There's enough intriguing college seniors that we can go under-slot for a couple picks.

Of course, Houston's a big stumbling block, if they know they can get Appel for less than slot. Still, 2+ mil should put us in the game for enough of the top tough sign guys that are out there. I'd have a good laugh if we took Cavan Biggio, though.

Got to feel for Denney - not drafted in the first two rounds while he was actually attending the draft.

So I fell asleep before our second pick, yeah I know but my kids were out and I took the chance to sleep, why are so many down on our second pick? He's a lefty that hits mid nineties, correct? Please tell me it isn't his college w and l record.

Chris Okey also announced he's going to college, but his dad isn't the head coach of Clemson. A team should be able to buy him out of that commitment.

Because a couple of pundits didn't put a low enough number in front of his name, and people think that getting a guy with a pundit's ranking superficially lower than the spot you are picking in the middle rounds means you win the draft.

Dude on MLB Network was quoting W/L record to mock the pick. Might have been as bad as anything Gammons or Reynolds said.

Here is who Law considers the best available at this point (his winners/losers piece doesn't say anything about the Cubs).

Best available

1. Kyle Serrano, RHP | Farragut (Tenn.) HS

2. Jon Denney, C | Yukon (Okla.) HS

3. Connor Jones, RHP | Great Bridge HS (Chesapeake, Va.)

4. Andrew Mitchell, RHP | TCU

5. Wil Crowe, RHP | Pigeon Forge (Tenn.) HS

6. Ryan Boldt, OF | Red Wing (Minn.) HS

7. Jacob Brentz, LHP | Parkway South HS (Manchester, Mo.)

8. Garrett Williams, LHP | Calvary Baptist HS (Shreveport, La.)

9. Cord Sandberg, OF | Manatee HS (Bradenton, Fla.)

10. Dustin Driver, RHP | Wenatchee (Wash.) HS

Most of these players slid on signability concerns; Jones explicitly told scouts he would not sign and was going to Virginia, while Brentz was reportedly looking for a big bonus to buy him out of Missouri. Mitchell has worked as a starter but too many teams may view him as a reliever, and he was under-scouted early in the spring when he was a little-used piece in TCU's bullpen.

There were also some injury issues that caused a couple of these guys to fall. There are serious concerns about Crowe's medicals, as he has had ACL issues in both knees, while Boldt missed much of the season with minor knee injuries.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some of these guys, especially Crowe, Sandberg and Driver, go early on Friday with deals cut overnight or in the morning.

I really like Andrew Mitchell and think he'd be a great reliever. I hate taking someone whose ceiling is reliever in the third round but it sounds like he'd be good value here.

Not just quoting it, but he went back to it a couple times and other panelists, I assume HR, were guffawing in the background.

It's not just that, but that most reports were saying he peaked at 90 and had average stuff with no stand out pitch. It wasn't until a little while later that "mid-90s" was discussed.

If we take a college guy, I want Wahl over Mitchell. There are plenty of HS guys I'd be completely fine with it at 75. Perfect world, it'd be Jones, doubt we've got enough to sign him though.
