Cubs did not receive enough to trade Shark. Will explore extension over offseason, if Shark still refuses, a trade becomes more likely in the offseason.

Is this based on the Heyman story?

Yeah, should have mentioned it was Heyman. Rosenthal mentions teams on both Schierholtz and DeJesus, with one likely to go.

Arguello also said that the DBacks were trying to get Samardzija with a package based on Kennedy. He implies the Cubs responded along the lines of "Go home Kevin, you're drunk".

Ha yea was just coming here to post that. Apparently the D-backs weren't trying to sell low on Kennedy but rather were trying to nab Shark using a package built around Kennedy. Yea, umm..,,no.

Am I nuts? I see Kennedy as slightly better than Samardzija and I can't see the DBacks giving up Kennedy and their top pitching prospect (perhaps another) for Shark. Is this purely a money thing? I don't see the benefit from the DBacks perspective at all. Is Kennedy hurt perhaps?

How do you see Kennedy as better than Samardzija!?!?!?

You see Kennedy as better than Samardzija? I do not think many others see it that way.

Well, for starters, Samardzija has a losing career record of 27-31, as opposed to Kennedy's winning record of 49-38.

Incredibly intrigued. There's no way he's giving either away, so it could be an incredibly lucrative day. Granted, we'd be spending the remainder of the season looking at an awful lot of Conor Gillespie and Julio Borbon, but it could open the door for Ellsbury, Choo, or even Stanton in 2014.

Ian Kennedy was a 2.3WAR player in 2012, 4.8WAR in 2011. 8K/9, 2BB/9 in 2012. 1.3WHIP in 2012, 1.03WHIP in 2011. 207IP in 2012

Shark was a 1.8WAR in 2012, 1.1 in 2011. 9K/9m 3B/9. 174IP in 2012 with a 1.295WHIP. 1.219WHIP in 2011

The door is already open for any of those guys even if neither DeJuses or Schierholtz is traded.

If you think Kennedy is going to return to his form from 2011 and ignore the other 600 IP of his career, then sure he might be better than Samardzija. Save for that, there is literally nothing he's doing better than Samardzija right now.

Shark has been getting better each year, and has been much better than Kennedy this year. Kennedy has been clearly regressing. You don't need a slide rule to work this out.

And in 2013?

Yeah I get it, Kennedy is having a tough year and Shark is better in 2013 but the season isn't over yet. Both players are 28 and yes Samardzija has less mileage on his arm. Kennedy is also making 1.6M more this year. I get it but I'm saying that the difference in 2013 players isn't worth one or two of Arizona's top pitching prospects. I'm too lazy to look it up, but wasn't Bradley a top 5 prospect overall?

I would be shocked (and pleasantly surprised) if Arizona traded Kennedy and Bradley/Skaggs for Shark.

WAR is a counting stat and Samardzija was shut down for the final few weeks of 2012. Also, FanGraphs has Samardzija with the better WAR in 2012.

Combined with his poor 2013, Kennedy sure seems to be regressing fast.

And that is why I ask the question because I don't know.....is Kennedy hurt or something?
