Yea so umm...apparently these 3 bros are basically MLers basically none of whom have any chance of being a big-league starter, much less an impact one. Nice work.

This Ricky Nolasco trade is (another) sign Marlins ownership simply do not care about winning. Wow.

I'd guess that Wood has significantly more value than Maholm did at this point last year. However, I was shocked that we got Arodys for Maholm. So I have no idea what a team would give up.

Turns out we and the prospect rankings were maybe overestimating Vizcaino's ability to stay healthy.

Maybe. This was expected to be largely a rehab year for him. It's not like it was a major injury. A clean out of calcium deposits isn't one of those concerning setbacks. It's still too soon to label him the next Angel Guzman, but it's fair to say that the chances of him having trouble staying healthy in the future went up with this setback.

Wow, I like what the Cubs got for Feldman way more than what the Marlins got for Nolasco.

Agreed, but the Marlins saved over 11 million in the deal. Cubs got their value in players.

The Marlins return is awful, even if Nolasco is average. I'm not sure whether it affects us or not, to be honest. I'm definitely tempering my expectations though. I just hope we deal him soon. Seems like the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Indians, Rangers, Nats, and Diamondbacks are the most likely suitors right now. With the Pads, Giants, Rockies, Pirates, Phils, Angels, and Royals on the periphery. With him being the best guy out there, its better to do it now, than wait for other ghys to show up on the market.

this trade should have no effect on what return we get for garza. Everyone knew all Loria wanted was to get rid of the contract, he had nothing to negotiate on. Edited by Bunts Lick Butts

Do you mean no effect? If so, I pretty much agree.

Am hearing #Dodgers were only team willing to pay all of Nolasco's salary.

Rumored minor leaguers going to the Marlins are Stephen Ames, Josh Wall, and Angel Sanchez.

Blech.

I'm not ready to kill them on the deal. Wall/Ames are dime-a-dozen, but I sort of like Angel Sanchez. Even if you leave the money aside, getting Angel Sanchez seems like a decent enough headliner to a deal.

And for all the warts that Marlins FO has, they usually do a decent job of scouting guys they want in the minors (partly because they do this (trade guys) so often).

That said, I don't love Angel Sanchez. He very well could be more of a late inning pen arm type (if he developed) than a starter.

The Dodgers really love their wallet.

These teams are ideal trade partners - the Dodgers love to pick up the tab and Loria hates paying for anything.

Apparently the Marlins also traded their fourth international bonus pool to the Dodgers in the Nolasco trade.

If reports are correct, they already traded their second and third bonus slots. It's hilarious that Loria won't pay for big league talent or amateur talent. He's horrible.

Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post writes that the Nationals have "kicked the tires" on Matt Garza.

The Nationals entered the season seemingly with a loaded rotation, but both Dan Haren and Ross Detwiler have dealt with struggles and injury. Kilgore says talks between the Nats and Cubs haven't progressed to the point where Washington has made a formal proposal. Garza will be arguably the hottest name at this year's deadline, with the Rangers, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Indians, Dodgers and Orioles also possibly among those in the mix for him.

The Nats have a few interesting arms in their top 20 (according to Sickels, at least): Cole, Karns, Giolito, Solis, etc. Several of them have already have TJS, though, and I'm not sure we'd be able to pry away Giolito from them given Garza's only a rental. Someone with more knowledge please speculate.

All I want for Garza is one guy who's very likely to be a role 6 guy, outside shot at being a 7. Don't care if it's a pitcher or a position player. Preferably at A+ or above.

What does that mean?

My guesses on returns for Garza.....

Red Sox- Webster or Barnes and Bryce Brentz

Blue Jays- Drabek and Gose

Indians- Bauer and IFA money

Nats- AJ Cole and Nate Karns

Rangers- Olt or Rougned Odor and one of Perez, Luke Jackson or Justin Grimm

Rockies- Pomeranz and one of Tyler Anderson or Chad Bettis

Diamondbacks- Delgado and one of David Holmberg or Andrew Chafin

Pirates- Josh Bell, with one Alan Hanson or Gregory Polanco, and Kyle McPherson

As in the 20-80 scale. Reading Parks has rubbed off on me.

I still don't know what that means.

I'd definitely like a lot of those, especially the Rockies, Indians, and Pirates. Assuming an extension isn't a possibility, Bauer or Pomeranz would be great compensation.

Gross on all of these. I do like Barnes, though. He's got a great K/BB ratio this year but is giving up a ton of hits for some reason.

That Toronto package is terrible. Two has-been prospects.

I'd like to think the Cubs can get 1 really good arm, 1 solid-to-good arm, and a throw-in bat (last 2 interchangeable with solid-to-good bat, and throw-in arm) for Garza.

The package of players I would hope for would be:

Red Sox- 1 of Matt Barnes/Henry Owens, Drake Britton, Lavarnway as a throw in if the Cubs add

something (reliever, prospect)

DBacks- Skaggs, Chase Anderson

Rockies- I like the package you came up with. I'd take that.

Rangers- 2 of Luke Jackson, Martin Perez, Justin Grimm. Wilmer Font and Neil Ramirez are intriguing as ML ready options if the Cubs can throw in an OF or RP.

I don't see the Pirates being a fit, since they aren't trading Cole or Taillon. Other than that, they are very SS and OF heavy on guys far from the majors...the strength of the Cubs system. Don't see the match. Also don't see the Jays having enough to get a deal done for Garza.

Not sure on the Nats and Indians. If the Indians are giving up Bauer, they wouldn't have to give much else for me to be excited about that deal, even with his walks. Nats don't have a lot that I know of outside of Cole, but I'd take him and a couple other arms. Ian Krol is a good looking, hard-throwing LH reliever that I'd be interested in.

Leaving aside the fact that I'm still not huge on Bryce Brentz, I think the ideal trade for Garza would involve getting an upside arm back and a "high floor" arm/upper level arm back (akin to your Diamondbacks model). If the Red Sox are the target, I'd target someone like Drake Britton as the 2nd piece (more because I'm usually a sucker for power lefties that can get enough groundballs). That said, there are a lot of other arms.

I'm going to be ... mildly surprised if the Nats move Nate Karns for a rental. All indications are they LOVE him. I could see something like AJ Cole and Taylor Jordan, though. I could see arguments that Cole/Jordan is still wishful thinking, and I could see Nats fans arguing that it's too much for a rental. It's really somewhat hard to figure out what this market is going to look like.
