On the bright side, if the theory holds, at least Starlin is coachable. I'm about tired of Sveum digs about laps in concentration and what not.

I was being serious. Theo broke him. They are trying to teach him to be more patient and drive pitches from hitter's counts, and it's got him in this horrible chasm where he takes hittable pitches early in the count, flails at pitches with two strikes and overswings at everything.

Maybe this is the just the lull before it all clicks together and he superstars again, or maybe they'll just give up and he can go back to the old approach.

I actually pretty much agree with this. Have to hope things just had to get worse before they get better.

People who have watched more games than me: what do you make of Castro's defense this year? Anecdotally the range/arm stuff seems about the same, and maybe a couple more misplays errors than years past. UZR is telling a very different story, with his range especially going from +7 to -9 this year. Does that align at all with what anyone else has seen?

Going from my memory on a lot of the games I've watched I see him making errors on more routine plays, and making some of the more difficult ones.

I remember a few plays this year (particularly up the middle) where he'll dive and have it go under his glove. It seemed to me at the time that if he stayed on his feet and took a deeper angle, he could have cut it off and still had time to make the throw.

Theo was on Waddle & Silvy today and he discussed Castro. What he said did make sense to me. That Starlin was called up to the big leagues fairly quickly and this has been his first real experience with failure and needing to make adjustments...which presumably would normally happen during the minor league journey and not at the major league level.

Totally irrelevant but my son went through an nasty slump and every swing looked like that one.

He simply wasn't letting the ball get deep ...... Was incredibly difficult to correct because it basics

Lay comes down to confidence.

The goofy swing seemed to come from starting to early reaching for a pitch that fooled him.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum still seems to be trying to find a day to give struggling shortstop Starlin Castro the same kind of “breather” first baseman Anthony Rizzo got Tuesday.

“I haven’t found one yet,” he said before another hitless night dropped the two-time All-Star’s batting average to .232.

Casn someone please explain that quote to me. It makes it sound as if Sveum is bound by something to keep Castro in the lineup, and that as soon as he's able, Castro will get a game off.

WTF?!?!?

Tomorrow - Saturday, June 22, 2013 - Barney at SS, Valbuena at 2nd and Ransom at 3rd. Castro with the day off. IS it really any more difficult than that???? Or am I missing something????

Days off are not magic. It might work, but there's no guarantee. The team had days off before and after the two game series in Anaheim a couple weeks ago during the early stages of this massive slump. It didn't help him then.

Well, days on certainly aren't working
