Tayler Scott sure can rack up the groundouts - 9-1 GO-FO through 4 scoreless with just one strikeout.

EDIT: Now, he's at 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 11-2 GO-FO. The hit was a blooper between Amaya and Zapata. Didn't catch Scott's pitch count but it's low.

He's generally matching his profile at Boise: he has yet to allow a HR as a pro pitcher. If you don't walk many and don't give up any HR's, you can afford to live without many K's. But his control is the big question. This is start #5, and four have been variably good (2.0 ERA, 15K/4BB/17H/23 innings). But the one "bad" start was 5 walks and he got killed. Overall his control has been pretty good, perhaps more consistent than at Boise; but the composite numbers reflect the bad-control day, too.

I know we got a high-80's velocity in his first start. I'll be curious to see what it is when it's warm and he's loose, but also when he's been making enough starts so that he might not be so strong and fresh as pitchers tend to be in April.

Speaking of low-K groundball guys, Dallas Beeler has also been a groundball guy for a while; but in previous years he still allowed a lot of HR's. With low K's and plenty of HR's, even without many walks he wasn't very effective. When he allowed three HR's in his first start this year, I figured same old story for him. But since then, he hasn't allowed a HR, has a huge GB ratio, and doesn't walk people. He's sitting with a 2.61 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP. Obviously FIP is higher, and he must be getting kinda lucky. But I'm guessing his control and/or slider have gotten better and he's more consistent. Nice to see things going well for him. Will be interesting to see how that holds up over the next months. At 23 he's not a fossil yet.

Heh heh, in the 6th Scott lost his control and allowed 2 walks and 4 hits. Consistency is hard.

Per the broadcast, pitches were up, sinker wasn't as crisp and he definitely tired. The first two hits were both very weak.

Wonder what's going on with Gioskar Amaya. He was one of the unsung guys at Boise last year, but had a pretty promising season. This year he's struck out 27 times in 91 ABs and only had 3 walks for the season going into Thursday night. This after putting up .298/.381 line in SS ball. Power numbers are also down after 12 triples and 8 HRs last year. Only has 2 triples and 0 HRs in 1/3 of the ABs so far. Doesn't seem to be completely overmatched as he is hitting a low, but non disasterous .253.

Is it possible the shitty weather is affecting him more than other guys? Can't think of anything else.

Could be true. But would like to see him putting the ball in play. 3 more Ks tonight. Obviously too early to worry about much, but putting the ball in play is something that is always noticeable when it is extreme in either direction.

Torreyes' K rate is starting to cross into the absurd. I mean, you'd expect anyone to get called out on strikes on a terrible call more often than once in 65 PAs.

And it's come with an increase in BB rate and LD%.

I've had a good feeling about Torreyes since we acquired him. Of course, the last guy I had a good feeling about was Austin Reed. So I mean, [expletive] me, right?

another good start for cabrera

Was at Kane County games last night. Takeaways are that Vogelbach and Shoulders look like men among boys. Both are big men who have great approaches. Shoulders walk off was a line shot and he admired it like a star! He is built like a truck, more bottom heavy but I think he could draw more comps to Fielder if he keeps showing power.

Talked to Vogelbach outside in between games. He said he plans on being in AA by end of year. Seemed confident but cool.

Didn't see much from Amaya, Contreras or Hernandez but as a whole the team takes a lot of pitches!

Scott looked good and was getting all ground balls, tough hitting weather though.

Left mid game 2 as it was cold.

Is he becoming a guy to really pat attention to? I remember him showing flashes previously but being inconsistent.

Sadly, there are only like 4 pitchers above Low A that have even a slight chance of being a decent SP at the MLB level. Cabrera is one of them and probably has the best stuff, so in that sense he's definitely worth paying attention to.
