This is not an article about Girardi or the Cubs, but maybe it has some relevance?

"The reason objective thinkers have said at times managers are only worth at the most X wins over the period of a year is because their focus is on game decisions," Cherington says. "From 7 to 10 every night, the manager makes decisions. Over the course of the season, those decisions can impact winning or losing some. Whatever that is, it's not a huge number.

"That's not factoring in all the other things. Every player on a team has a range of possible performance outcomes. Everyone has a high end, a low end and the most likely outcome in the middle. And if more players are performing toward the top half of that range, and the manager has something to do with that, the manager is absolutely valuable. It's still players first. You have to have talent to win. But I dismiss that a manager can't be more than his strategy."

I agree with the overall point but I haven't seen/heard much to indicate that Girardi has that coaching wizardry in him.

It just feels weird to strip the player budget under the flag of "lack of funds," and then go out make your manager the highest paid in baseball.

It's.....schizophrenic.

And, I think, it further underlines that Ricketts is full of horsecrap when he says he can't spend.

Maybe he hit big on a scratch-off lottery ticket.

The idea of Mike Maddux is still pretty awesome.

Cubs apparently aren't interested despite him showing interest.

I will say, I didn't think that hiring Girardi was much of a sign that the team is going to be spending big or anything like that, but if they're giving him 5 million, that has to be an indicator that the payroll isn't about to take another dive. I just can't see the front office thinking that a specific manager would be a prudent use of their limited marginal dollars.

Hadn't heard about that, then BN popped up on my Facebook feed with this article, for those who are interested...

Not surprising. The emphasis seems to be on established track record this time. If the reports of the FO and Sveum getting of the same page are true, perhaps they want someone whose philosophy is more clearly established/evident.

Just filed: Yanks make offer to Girardi, waiting for him to decide.

Levine says Greg is a candidate.....doubt anyone would bitch about that.

Sarcasm?

Nah. Would anyone? I figure we all would at least believe he'd be great, out of pure homerism, right? I'd convince myself at least.

There are no absolute criteria, but we will prioritize managerial or other on-field leadership experience and we will prioritize expertise developing young talent.

/hires Greg Maddux

And I would irrationally consider Greg a HZoF manager the second he was hired....

Somewhere, Barry Rozner is laughing and denting his fingers in anticipation.

/then goes and resumes throwing darts at an Aramis Ramirez poster.

Evidently in an interview a few years back, before Girardi won a WS as a manager, he said he'd give up all 3 of his WS rings with the Yanks for one with the Cubs.

Girardi's Cubs career is such a weird blind spot for me; it blows my mind that he played seven seasons with them. Outside of the Kile announcement I can't remember a damn thing about him as a Cub.

You don't remember the 3 headed catching monster of Joe Girardi, Damon Berryhill and Rick Wrona? I remember that I was 16 and wanted Wrona to start more games.
