Dont agree with giving Ellsbury a huge deal with Almora semi-close. I think Almora is Nomar if he were a center fielder.

Almora is semi-close? Outside of the IFA guys, of prospects of note he is easily the furthest away.

If he starts at Daytona next year, that would put him about 2 seasons away, wouldnt even be halfway through ellsbury's deal.

Two seasons if absolutely everything goes right for him as a prospect.

It's pretty crazybuckets to be passing on good players right now because you think *maybe* you might have another player for that position two years down the road.

Is that even something you *want* to avoid? Having too many good players isn't a bad thing.

Especially when it's the OF where the 3 positions are reasonably interchangeable...not necessarily ideal moving a CF to a corner, of course, but it's a problem that can be dealt with.

Why block a good cheap young player with a good expensive old player on a million year deal?

If Soler and Bryant are in the corners, there's no place to move anyone.

Isn't Almora pretty much the safest bet to be a steady everyday player among our top 4?

Hey, Im all for signing Ellsbury, just not for the million year deal it's going to take.

I don't want Ellsbury because I don't trust him to stay healthy, has nothing to do with Almora, who we can trade and I'd be fine with.

Why block a good cheap young player with a good expensive old player on a million year deal?

Because

1) We don't know for certain that Almora will be a good player.

2) There's barely such a thing as "blocked" to begin with, let alone with two guys who could both be useful at three different positions. It's not like he's going to be sitting there hitting .330/390/550 in Iowa for two full seasons because we just can't figure out any other way to extract maximum value out of the situation.

There's plenty of reasonable reasons not to sign a guy like Ellsbury, but some exciting kid who has half a season in the Midwest League is not one of them.

I have grave doubts about Ellsbury being able to provide value deep into his 30's without the help of PED's.

Plus, again, Almora's a pretty safe bet with his defense and hit tool

Then don't sign him for that reason. Almora has nothing to do with it.

Almora's a way to extract maximum value at that position.

Sign Ellsbury to a huge deal for 6 years and that value is wasted.

So if Ellsbury is there, there's absolutely nothing to do but let Almora rot in AAA. Can't trade either of them, can't put either at a different position. Just wasted.

This is some neely-level stuff.

Sure, you can always trade him, but the chances are pretty good he's more valuable than Ellsbury over the next 6 years. Stop your yatteting about neely. Youre the ultimate neely.

Not going to be able to trade Ellsbury with a deal like that. Moving one to a corner will be hard if both Soler and Bryant are there.

Im cool with the debate, but why cant people have a discussion without one side being compared to neely [expletive] crenshaw?

IF he stays healthy, probably. But he's a long way from the bigs and he's been hurt a lot already. I think it's even odds at best (right now) that he makes the majors. His health is a huge question.

You can always trade anyone, so long as you are willing to eat the money.

"Blocking" isn't a real thing.

Eating the money destroys value. And you just said blocking was kind of a real thing

Before the year that's probably true, but with what Baez did this year and the level he did it at, combined with Almora's injuries, idk if it's still true.

I don't think making a big financial outlay knowing that it is going to create a situation where someone has to go is a good idea, but at the same time Almora isn't a player who is exactly knocking on the door. I'd have very little issue with signing a good center fielder long term.

Now whether or not you feel comfortable shelling out a ton of money/years for a guy who is volatile health and performance wise is a smart idea, even in a vacuum, is a whole other and very valid issue.

Destroys whose value? If it destroys the value of the veteran, then the veteran wasn't good enough to get the contract to begin with. Which again, is possible, but has nothing at all to do with Almora.

I was being generous.

No one's. It destroys the value to the team created by a young, cheap option.
