Callis' Cubs next five prospects: http://jimcallis.mlblogs.com/2014/07/31/bonus-cubs-prospects-nos-21-25-2/#more-237

21. Villanueva

22. Hannemann

23. Sands

24. Stinnett

25. Cease

I am really excited about Stinnett. 97 MPH cutter? Thats filthy.

Outlaw Curve Ball!

I count half a dozen likely 3rd-5th starters in their top 25 (including Hendrickson). Nice problem to have. Maybe I am delusional here, but Black sounds a bit like Arrieta.

We have more depth and quality pitching prospects than is commonly reported. But it is tough to say that they're likely 3-5th starters as the attrition rate is so high for pitchers.

Yeah, he's #6.

Luis Hidalgo has a 13/9 K/BB in 165 PA. That is amazing, even if it's the DSL.

Albert Almora has grounded into 18 double plays.

Stephen Bruno has been hit 12 times in 354 PA. I actually expected more.

Carlos Penalver's ISO is .059.

Kris Bryant has 13 stolen bases. wat.

I'm putting this here, because it's still highly unconfirmed. The Score just said on their update that someone with the same name as Javier Baez's brother tweeted that he'd been called up.

Found this list of Rule 5 candidates, updated 8/1. The only obvious name to protect is Edwards. Maybe McNutt, depending on what's going on with him. I can't imagine Maples making it a season on someone's big league roster.

Gioskar Amaya, INF

John Andreoli, OF

Delbis Arcila, OF

Jose Arias, RHP

Jeffrey Baez, OF

Frank Batista, RHP

Zach Cates, RHP

Hunter Cervenka, LHP

Pin-Chieh Chen, OF

Gerardo Concepcion, LHP (Article XX-D player - can elect free-agency if drafted & then later re-claimed by Cubs)

Willson Contreras, C

Wes Darvill, INF

Taylor Davis, C

Alberto Diaz, LHP

C. J. Edwards, RHP

Kevin Encarnacion, OF

P. J. Francescon, RHP

Victor Garcia, LHP

Dustin Geiger, INF

Anthony Giansanti, OF

Jae-Hoon Ha, OF

Marco Hernandez, INF

Michael Jensen, RHP

Eric Jokisch, LHP

Matt Loosen, RHP

Rafael Lopez, C

Jeff Lorick, LHP

Barret Loux, RHP

Dillon Maples, RHP

Andrew McKirahan, LHP

Trey McNutt, RHP (Article XX-D player - can elect free-agency if drafted & then later re-claimed by Cubs)

Alberto Mineo, C

Dude, you're chance of getting added to the 40 man this offseason is basically the same as McNutt's.

Depending on how they're throwing, Cates and Pineyro have a shot. Jokisch almost definitely will be added. Cervenka has a shot, especially if Rosscup isn't looking like an answer .

At any rate, I'm not sweating it if we lose a guy or two at this point. But I'm not seeing much that seems realistic a team could keep all year.

It's been 4 years since McNutt was a thing, I don't think he'll be a problem. I could see someone wanting to gamble a bullpen spot on Arias, Cates, Cervenka, McKirahan, or possibly Maples. Edwards seems like the only definite.

No one on the 60 man will be around most likely, unless Fujikawa feels like giving us a break next year. We lose Villanueva and Schierholtz to FA. Maybe Baker?

At any rate, Kalish, Vitters, Brett, Szczur, Valaika, Rusin, and Watkins are all droppable.

No one's a no matter what but Edwards. Pineyro if the space is available.

Sorry, I meant those are the only guys I'd consider protecting. Edwards is the only one who I'd definitely protect. I would protect the rest in that order of importance. I expect Cates and McKirahan would get picked if they weren't protected. Maybe Starling Peralta or Jose Arias too.
