If Rizzo has another year similar to 2014, he should creep even higher. That contract is so absurdly good.

Doesn't get much more random than this.

I'm currently sitting in an investment property workshop being hosted by former Cubs backup catcher Tom Lundstedt.

He's pretty good, if anybody was wondering.

Guess Castro isn't even an honorable mention...with his contract that's kind of surprising.

18. Kris Bryant

7. Anthony Rizzo!

Higher than Riz:

Harper

Bumgarner

Sale

Goldschmidt

McCutchen

Trout

Castro not being on, let alone getting HM, seems like it may be his biggest oversight of any player.

At least 73 guys having more trade value than Clayton Kershaw makes me think this was written by some shmuck at fangraphs.

jonah keri is a half-step above that and less willing to say anything interesting or slightly controversial

From the article. Reading is fun: "Clayton Kershaw is still a highly desirable commodity despite the $193 million owed to him over the next six years, but the clause in his contract that grants him free-agency rights at year’s end if he’s traded in-season or the same rights at the end of a full campaign if he’s dealt in the offseason substantially undercut his trade value"

Yeah, no doubt Kershaw is on the short list of most valuable players in baseball, but nobody would trade a top 50 player to get him for half a year.

Unless there was clear evidence of tampering, of course.

Maybe I am dense and not understanding your point, but teams trading away players can allow the team acquiring the player to discuss extensions before the trade and is usually a prereq to the trade actually occurring.

Edit: Yep, can't read.

A half season of Clayton Kershaw is an immensely valuable asset. Keri's the same guy out there talking about how guys don't have much trade value because of their monster contracts, and yet he's not valuable because he can opt out?

If the Cubs were 5 games in first place on July 31st, would you trade Rizzo, Bryant, Soler, Baez, or Castro for 3 months of Kershaw and a *chance* to be able to re-sign him for 10/$300 in an open market situation?

Would you trade one of them for each of the 73 guys ahead of him on the list? And yes, sneaky has convinced me that I'd trade Baez for him without a moment's notice.

I guess Keri would disagree with the notion that the Mets would be the side adding value to a Harvey/Castro trade.

@jonahkeri Was Castro close? Age 25, 9 career WAR over five seasons, 5 yr deal w/ AAV under $9M. Fig'd he was in Pt2 when he missed Pt1...

Jonah Keri ‏@jonahkeri 5h5 hours ago

@scottlange Yes he was close, favorable deal for sure

A.K.A. Whoops, I totally forgot about him.

Why the hell I leave CSN Sports Talk Live on for so long is beyond me.

Mark Lazerus and his stupid crooked tooth and ugly ass face attempting to talk about baseball pisses me off so much

Just said the Cubs were years away from being mediocre, are losing 95 games next year, and are definitely losing more games than the Sox next year.

Remember it and troll him after the season is over.
