I honestly don't think we'll sign a guy tied to a pick this year either way. I think we'll get Lester or Maeda.

can't hitch your wagon to one guy like that (don't really care about maeda)

much better off having all options available.

Cubs are in line to draft 9th and on pace to avoid 90 losses.

11 picks are protected this year, right, because the Astros are picking twice? So we'd still have to finish with the 10th worst record but we'd be picking 11th in that case.

Correct. We are still 2.5 games behind the Mets for the 12th pick, which is the first unprotected spot. And we hold the tiebreaker over everyone around us except for the White Sox.

do we even need to think about the astros thing?

it's still bottom ten. just so happens that 10 is picking 11th and so on. (i realize that soccer was probably just getting clarification over the fact that the 11th pick next year is still protected)

Brian Schlitter has been in Iowa for 3 weeks. He's still tied for 3rd on the team in appearances.

Just scored an incredibly cheap room along Michigan Ave. for Jan. 16-18. Gonna be a long march down to the Sheraton, but the savings are worth it and convention should be a blast this time.

Does anyone know which of our players are bilingual? Which speak just one language?

Wondering where the divide in the clubhouse will be and which guys bridge it.

Wada is bilingual, but I'm pretty sure that's not what you're looking for.

where are you drawing the line at what constitutes bilingual? a lot of the spanish speakers know some english...they might not be fluent but they know more than enough to get by.

soler is probably the least comfortable with it at this point as he's only been here what, 2-2.5 years?

Well, I guess I'm asking if we've got any foreign guys who don't/won't speak any English at all, like Vlad or Ichiro? I know Soler uses an interpreter, but is he working towards learning English? Just curious when it comes to clubhouse communication.

At the same time, how is Rizzo's Spanish?

Pretty sure all international guys (and presumably anyone not fully comfortable with English) are taking classes/lessons or something in the minors

given that his paternal grandpa is his closest italian relative and he was born and raised in south florida, his spanish is probably better than his italian

Depends on what they taught him on the Italian team during the WBC

Sounds like Ryne Sandberg has his hands full managing the Phillies. Sandberg is a tough, proud guy, a Hall of Fame player, but apparently he’s a little too tough and is receiving backlash from his players. As Bobby Valentine learned in Boston, you can’t be tough on players. You have to pat them on the back and treat them with kid gloves. Sandberg has had issues this season with Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Domonic Brown, and others. Not that any of them, with the exception of Hamels and Rollins, should have anything to say given their poor performances.

Not that it was ever truly being fired in our direction (as in I don't think he was ever given serious consideration at any point)

That was one of the first awesome things Theo did right after being hired. Going out of their way to almost immediately rule him out.
