Agreed. It's a tough call. I was thinking leaving Wood as the only lefty but I also think whoever is least likely trade bait might go to the pen in order to showcase the other guys. (Obviously other than Shark and Jackson)

After last year it's kind of a nice problem to have.

Sveum said today that when Garza comes back(pitches today and has at least one more minor league start) Shark, E-Jax, and Wood are definitely staying in the rotation. So, either Feldman or Villanueva is the odd man out, barring a trade or injury, since he also said they wouldn't go to a 6 man.

Personally, I don't want to see either go the pen. I'd rather see them start and try to up their trade value as much as possible anyway. My guess is Villanueva would be the one to the pen, since Feldman is only signed for this year. Then, if he or Garza is dealt relatively early, Villanueva could go back to the rotation at that point and leave enough time to build interest in him as well, if we go that route.

I guess we'll be set with Shark, E-Jax, and Wood for 3 spots entering 2014, possibly with Baker back cheaply, if he comes back at some point. Vizcaino is a possible 2014 option and conceivably anyone we'd receive via trades at the deadline would be as well. If payroll is stagnant for 2014, we can sign or trade for one 10+ mill type and grab another shortterm type guy as well9plus add 20-25 mill worth of offense), depending on whether Villanueva survives this deadline or not.

Don't forget we have the #2 pick this year as well. If we draft either Gray/Appel as expected at #2, I'd expect them to be up by the end of 2014.

We should be in a pretty good position going forward.

I'd say the rotation going forward looks thin but adequate. There's not a lot of margin for attrition (which is always a big threat with starting pitching), but if we avoid that it should be acceptable.

@BruceMiles2112 #Cubs P Vizcaino has setback. Scope for calcium buildup in elbow. Won't throw for 6 wks

At least it's nothing structural? This sucks.

It could certainly be worse, but this pretty much ends his season. Given his injury history, anything from him at this point will be a bonus.

Hmm. I wonder if that trip to Chicago recently was legit routine or if there was something up even then.

You just can't count on sore-armed pitchers.

Edit: Sullivan's tweet phrases it "May begin rehab in 6 weeks." which might imply that there is a rehab process before he even begins a normal throwing process.

As far as I can see, Sullivan is the only one who said "rehab."

@CSNMooney: Arodys Vizcaino will not throw for another six weeks after Dr. Andrews performed arthroscopic debridement on his right elbow.

[expletive] you, sullivan

What's the issue with what he said?

He wrote an article entitled "Vizcaino shut down for the year", which isn't true?

People were talking about his tweets, and beat writers don't write the titles of their articles.

I also don't see a Sullivan article with such a title on the website.

The title apparently changed this morning. It definitely said "Vizcaino shut down for the year", and the article explicitly stated as such as well, so it was definitely Sullivan perpetrating the rumor.

also, i thought the "won't pitch for the cubs this season" tweet was intentionally misleading. anybody who follows the system would know he hasn't appeared in a minor league game yet and assume he meant that vizcaino wouldn't see game action this year.

There was a lot of talk that he would appear for the Cubs this season, and I wouldn't assume anybody who follows the system would be up-to-date on what his status was prior to the injury.
