@jimcallisMLB: I'd at least double that. @keithlaw: $10 million. Maybe more? @Buster_ESPN: If Brady Aiken were free agent, how much he would get? @MLBDraft

oh shut up Casey. If he's got a bum elbow, they shouldnt have to pay him slot. Take the money or send the kid to UCLA and let him "try for more" after 3 yrs in college and a TJS. Pretty simple.

Why should the kids' adviser shut up? He absolutely should speak up on his behalf.

What, if any, kind of physicals/MRIs/etc. are done before the draft that teams are given to look at on players?

None, except in rare instances when a player is trying to prove he's healthy (the only one we heard of this year was Freeland trying to prove he's past his HS arm woes).

McLeod had voiced complaints before about how MLB is the only big four sport without a Combine/medical testing.

The contention is that Aiken is perfectly healthy, and that the 'abnormality' the Astros are pointing out in the MRI would also be present in many other pitchers that are not hurt.

Seriously. This is just a ploy to get another high bonus guy in the fold.

Yep.

And I'd love it if Aiken and Nix end up at UCLA but they're being screwed by the Astros. They've gone from $6.5 to $5 to $3.4 for the legitimate 1.1 pick and left Nix in a holding pattern.

It will never make sense to me that MLB allows teams to spend 250 mill on a team payroll, but not allow a team to spend 20 mill on amateur talent.

Because nobody is negotiating on behalf of amateurs as a whole?

Because it is one of the only costs they can actually control without interference from the MLBPA.

The only thing I disagree with blaming the Astros here is in tying Aiken and Nix together. The CBA dictates that end of things. And all teams are being extremely careful on how deals are becoming official-under slot guys 1st, then the over slot guys, because the penalties are too harsh to mess this up.

@kileymcd: The Astros are doing what the rules allow them to do & are being demonized for taking it to logical extreme. Same re: service time w/HOU+TB.

@kileymcd: The problem is MLB created this issue yet again via hole in their rules. Fixing it best includes blowing up draft & MLB $ going to amateurs.

@kileymcd: MLB doesn't want to blow up the draft, or only w/huge concessions from union for doing it. Expect bandaid solution & more long term problems

@kileymcd: This is consistent with what rival orgs don't like about the Astros. Traditional types perceive smart strategic moves as cold & calculating.

@kileymcd: Not saying that's right or wrong but this is the risk you accept when you're rocking the boat. Lose the margin for error in personnel moves.

These kind of things are surely going to change player/scout perspective of the Houston organization. Then again I thought when the Phillies completely screwed over two of their draft picks in the 2013 draft that that would have repercussions and it really didn't.

The Phillies took one high school player in the Top 27 rounds this year. Last year 7 of their top 13 picks were high schoolers, plus a JC guy.

So, yeah it had an impact.

Being a dick and trying to drive down the price on a guy after your organized collusion has forced him to negotiate only with you isn't a loophole in this system. It's as old as the draft.

It's fun, but until the deadline passes or a deal is signed, it's hard to tell how much is bluster and how much is reality.

because he's bitching like the the Astros OWE him 6.5Mil. If they think he's got a shaky elbow, then they dont owe him anything. If i'm an astros fan and this guy is headed for TJS, i'd much rather have the 2nd pick next year. Even more so because eff all the pitchers.

The point is most all pitchers have abnormalities in their elbows. They're trying to take advantage right now of what's very likely a non-situation. Close is probably the most respected agent in baseball, I'm very confident this is the Astros being dicks. Not the other way around. Especially considering quite a few teams evidently complain about them.

Okay, then if you are an Astros fan you can go ahead and express that wish, but in the meantime it is his adviser's job to advocate on behalf of the player.

I remember getting into a heated argument with one of my friend's brother about Eli Manning when he was drafted. His argument went something like, "he should just be happy to play in the nfl."

@injuryexpert: Casey Close, Aiken's agent, has sent him to three different top docs who have all cleared his arm to pitch immediately.

Are they top docs in @injuryexpert's mind or a real person?
