Except that he's not average.

http://wp.advancednflstats.com/playerstats.php?year=2012&pos=QB&season=reg

Ranked as the #12 QB during the regular season. Including playoffs, he's ranked #6.

In 2011, he was ranked #9 in the regular season, and in 2010 he was ranked #5 in the regular season.

I'm not familiar with that site or those rankings, but those are the best I've seen Flacco ranked. I usually use Football Outsiders and they have him ranked 14th (2009), 15th (2010), 19th (2011). They don't have 2012 up yet, but going off traditional stats he was better in 2012 than 2011, but worse than 2010.

As someone who hates the Ravens

Now we get to it.

Like I said, I really like that they kept him because I have no doubt Ozzie Newsome would have replaced him with somebody about as good for less and made the overall team better. I have no issue admitting players/coaches/administrators on teams I hate are good at what they do - Newsome is the best GM in the NFL and Bill Belichick is the best coach. If I could have either on the Titans I'd take them in a second.

Maybe, maybe not. I mean, if he's as bad as dew says, cutting him won't be all that painful.

If he's still good though, they can extend him and manipulate the cap hit.

I've never used the term "bad" in reference to Flacco. He's average when it comes to legitimate QBs in the league.

why are you using WPA for this exercise?

The argument I'd make for Flacco is similar to the one I'd make for Cutler. He plays on a team that has been defense (and running) focused. He has not had the weapons or system that other QB's have had and his individual ranking has hurt as a result.

That's a legitimate argument and one I held to for the first few years of his career (really liked him coming out of college). But what's concerning is that they've added weapons the past couple of years and opened it up for him more and his numbers in 2011/2012 are worse than in 2009/2010.

The cap hit is a 1 time thing. The 24 million is a result of his remaining pro-rated signing bonus accelerating onto that year's cap.

Of course, that would still make it a 3 year/62 million year deal (with the cap hit over 4 years).

I could see that being an argument for keeping Flacco that long, but I'm guessing they'll end up extending rather than cutting, even if he doesn't get any better.

Thanks, that does make it a bit more palatable. 20% of the cap (if it doesn't increase much in 3 years) is still a pretty big deal, but it is just a one-year thing.

Well, we'll have to see how much the system change with Caldwell sticks in improving his value.

That's the biggest reason for optimism with Flacco, but I'd be concerned about dropping that kind of money on a guy based on a 5 (or so) game sample.

Because footballoutsiders keeps being used, and I've become less and less confident in their rankings over the past couple of seasons. And I'm not paying for PFF's stats. And honestly it has an easy to remember URL.

I haven't used FO a ton, but I've liked most of what I've seen. They nail the Titans players pretty well, though there's the occassional questionable ranking (as there is with almost any advanced stat group in any sport).

Good, because nobody said that wasn't the case. You should probably read the posts you're replying to.

I have no idea what you're talking about in your last few posts then. It's ridiculous to compare Flacco and Sanchez. Then you make a post attempting to say that it's not ridiculous, and saying we all have short memories. Only it's still a ridiculous comparison, so I haven't the foggiest idea what you're trying to say.

Because he wasn't comparing them as quarterbacks in 2012/2013. He was responding to a quote that stated Flacco "just proved that he can win a super bowl and play at a very high level when it matters most." He was making a statement about the argument that being so-so and "stepping it up" in the playoffs represents enough value to sign a quarterback to an enormous contract, which should be obvious to anyone with a shred of common sense. Your attempt at reducing that to "YOU CAN'T COMPARE SANCHEZ TO FLACCO CUZ SANCHEZ IZ BAD LOL" is laughable at best. Hell, Sanchez being bad only serves to aid his point. If Sanchez is bad, yet the Jets went to consecutive conference championship games with him, then maybe the value of a mid-tier quarterback is being overstated? Same with goony saying Alex Smith sucks. If he sucks, yet the Niners were a fumble away from going to the Super Bowl with him at QB, then maybe retaining a quarterback who isn't elite at elite pricing isn't the best investment?

I don't even agree with his position on Flacco, but I'm not being purposely hardheaded and distorting his position.

The NFLPA proposal, in which team captains and/or other parties pick players for two Pro Bowl teams once fan voting/team selection is complete, was presented to the owners two weeks ago at the league meeting and continues to generate positive momentum, sources said. There are no dissenting voices and league officials met this week to add to the skeleton they have in place for the format change, though more work must be done.

Brendon Ayanbadejo, a highly visible defender of gay rights and same-sex marriage, told the Baltimore Sun that four current NFL players are considering coming out as gay.

"I think it will happen sooner than you think," Ayanbadejo told the newspaper. "We're in talks with a handful of players who are considering it. There are up to four players being talked to right now, and they're trying to be organized so they can come out on the same day together. It would make a major splash and take the pressure off one guy. It would be a monumental day if a handful or a few guys come out.

Disappointing. Those skirts are so tantalizingly short!
