It typically means that you're one of the better players at your position in comparison to your peers (i.e. they don't take into account the bottom feeders of QBs who make the league minimum). Based on both traditional and advanced metrics, Flacco is not that.

No, it really doesn't. Flacco could have gotten the same contract from a team like the Titans or some other QB-starved franchise, and likely more. It's called market value. Quarterbacks like Flacco don't hit the market, it doesn't happen. Smart teams don't willingly let a quarterback of that caliber walk away.

As someone who hates the Ravens, I love that they brought Flacco back because I think it's going to hurt them in future years

i don't think it matters much unless the Titans find a quarterback of Flacco's caliber or better. They will continue to wander the wastes of the NFL wilderness until fortune smiles upon them and sends them a quarterback with a pulse.

And the Titans are in their current wilderness not because of poor QB play (it's not helping), but because Bud Adams is doing his best Al Davis impersonation and our current coaching staff can't coach. We could have Peyton Manning in his prime in Nashville and we'd probably still miss the playoffs.

The Colts had little more than Peyton Manning in his prime for years. Like I said, your team will suck until they find a quarterback. Make no mistake, they are absolutely in that Mad Maxian desert hell because they have no one to throw the football.

#Ravens announce they will open 2013 season with road game Thursday, Sept. 5. Wonder if #Bears could be in play? They host Baltimore this yr

This didn't happen. Ravens will open against the Broncos.

I've yet to see you back up your hype of Flacco with anything other than an apparent reliance on conventional wisdom that since his team won a Super Bowl he must be invaluable.

Do you have any support for your argument other than that his team won a Super Bowl after recovering from a pretty mediocre season to have a really hot four-game stretch?

As I've said before, the Titans' issues go far, far deeper than Jake Locker. Our coaching staff is pretty awful and our owner is going Al Davis on us.

I'd much rather swap the Titans' owner/GM/coaching staff for the Ravens' than swap Locker for Flacco.

Marvin Harrison

Reggie Wayne

Marshall Faulk/Edgerrin James

Dwight Freeney

Robert Mathis

That's definitely a bunch of scrubs, it's not like one of those guys is already in the hall of fame and there can be an argument made for at least 3 others (Harrison, Wayne, Freeney). That said, Peyton definitely does make his team better, but he's one of the greatest QBs in NFL history. Flacco is struggling to be a top 10-15 starting QB of the current era. There's really no comparison at all.

And my team will suck until Bud Adams realizes he's trashing the franchise with his senility and we actually get some competent coaching in here. The talent on the field really isn't that bad, the coaching staff just can't get anything out it. And while I'm not the biggest Locker fan, he's one of the biggest victims of the poor coaching staff.

TB gets Revis, they've really done a nice job the last 2 years of adding talent.

Seems like the Revis to TB rumors have been going for a couple of months now.

Yeah, pretty much. Signed him to a 6 year $96mm extension, but none of it's guaranteed. Gave up the 13th pick this year and a conditional pick next year.

Good deal by the Bucs. The contract is fantastic for them and while the 13th pick in the draft plus some is a lot, Revis has real potential to live up to it.

Great, the NFC South wasn't stacked enough. Carolina already had the #1-rated most difficult schedule in the league before the Revis move.

But that's not because of the NFC South. 3 of the teams in the NFC south were under .500. There just wasn't one team significantly more terrible than the rest.

So the division is evenly matched, (they were all 3-3 within the divsion last year) but def not stacked.

The other pick in the Revis trade is a conditional 4th next year and could only go as high as a 3rd round. So a 1st and a 3rd for him (at most) is pretty reasonable, imo, if he comes back to the player he was along with no guaranteed money.

Yeah but from what I was reading, the Jets would have been entitled to receive a 3rd round compensatory pick if Revis walked after next season, so they probably would have gotten that pick anyways. But yeah its not a bad return at all....funny to see how upset Jets fans are about the trade.

Aaron Rodgers signed a new deal, my Packer fan friend just texted me to say 76M guaranteed but I don't know how many years.

edit: 5 years 110M

Tebow released

Mike & Mike are treating this as a bigger story than the NFL Draft, Super Bowl and Boston Marathon Bombing combined

I told Eli that Ryan Nassib thinks he's a durable quarterback. He looked puzzled. "He said I'm adorable?"

Wouldn't surprise me if somebody creative picked up Tebow and made him into a pretty productive player. Not as a QB exclusively, but I think he's got enough natural talent to be a good football player if used right.

The Tebow stuff on ESPN today was example No. 1 as to why people hate ESPN.

I'm glad they wasted so much time discussing a backup quarterback.
