Walter Payton was apparently a really dirty player.

I don't think you understand the rule.

Walter stiff armed quite a bit. He also used huge shoulder pads and led with those shoulders very often, but I don't recall him leading with the helmet much.

Unfortunately the NFL spent years allowing lots of players to play recklessly and younger players saw that, and kept doing it more and more, which makes it difficult to get rid of that stuff by rules now.

@JoeGryffindor "@profootballtalk local buzz here in Arizona is that NFL directed coaches not to bed-mouth the new helmet rule." Of course they did.

I think there's a lot of confusion about the rule right now, for sure.

However, there's nothing dirty about getting your shoulder pads out front before you get tackled. When that happens, you're opening yourself up to either leaning slightly too much and getting a legit penalty or the ref making a bad call and screwing a team. If you don't do that, then you open yourself up to getting clotheslined or speared and potentially seriously injured.

There is something dirty and dangerous about leading with the crown of your helmet. If you get clotheslined or speared the other team will be penalized.

There's no rule about spearing unless you lead with your helmet, is there? Also, if it's dirty to drop your pads when contact is about to be made, then pretty much every ballcarrier in NFL history has been dirty pretty consistently.

You are pointlessly talking about dropping your pads when this is not at all what is being described.

It will come into the conversation, though. Players drop their pads when contact is coming, instinctually. When that happens, logically, the heads drops with the shoulders and opens up the almost certainty that refs are going to make mistakes (especially when the league office emphasizes this) and penalize runners when they don't lead with the crown of their helmet.

I this really is as insignificant an issue as the NFL claims, then the best case scenario is that it's needless regulation that gives refs, who already have a tough job, an extra opportunity to make mistakes and bog games down.

Are they still allowed to badmouth it?

I'm probably the only one that kind of wishes they didn't change the Jim Schwartz rule. If you're [expletive] stupid enough to throw a challenge flag on an auto-reviewed play, you deserve whatever you get.

It was a stupid penalty.

#Ravens announce they will open 2013 season with road game Thursday, Sept. 5. Wonder if #Bears could be in play? They host Baltimore this yr

Would be awesome to get the Thursday game done that early.

Do they not have Thursday games for teams who play the opener? Just last year the Giants played the opener and then played a Thursday night game 2 weeks later. After Green Bay played the opener they played a Thanksgiving game.

I wouldn't mind facing Baltimore in week one and having extra time to prepare for week 2.

You are right. All 16 teams play on Thursday between Weeks 2 and 15 (with three Thanksgiving games), so the opener is a separate deal.

Ah, damn. Didn't know that.

Did the defending Super Bowl champs ever open on the road before the Thursday night opening night game came on the schedule? Seems a bit odd they're having Baltimore play on the road.

There's a conflict with the Orioles, and the Orioles can't/won't reschedule.

The Packers either are having soon or already have had Michael Huff and Ahmad Bradshaw in for visits this week. Those would be two okay pickups for them assuming on the contracts. They have like $22m in cap space right now, but also have Rodgers, Matthews and Raji contracts expiring after this year (Rodgers might actually be in two) and will have to lock them up soon and that space will obviously need to be used for them.

I'd laugh at the Cowboys for that contract but the Bears have to re-sign Cutler soon.

While I'm not all that excited over the contract, it was a deal Dallas had to do. It's the going rate for QB's. The Cowboys needed to reduce his cap number this year and keep him off the market for next season.

QB contracts are completely out of control. Flacco as the highest paid (or one of, at least) QB in the NFL and Romo almost getting $18 mil per year is just ludicrous (especially Flacco).

I know it's a heavy passing league now and QBs are an integral part of that, but completely replaceable QBs are getting significant deals/returns (Alex Smith's ridiculous return included).
