Hopefully emery got enough bad feedback after a scare that we hired a CFL coach that he moves forward with the other dozen candidates.

I personally hope that Emery is not influenced by fan, media or even peer reaction and hires the best candidate he thinks is available.

I hope there is more than one voice at the table on this one.

emery said over and over at the PC, and i mean over and over, that his wouldn't be the only voice. a lot

Well of course I hope he confers with members of his staff (although I ultimately hope he makes the final decision). I'm talking about reaction from outside sources.

I don't think Trestman would be that bad. It's a very "outside the box" hire. He has a decent track record of working with QBs. Getting the most out of some QBs a lot less talented than Jay. He also worked with Jay before his pro day (according to Wikipedia). A pro day where Cutler propelled himself to the #11 pick seemingly out of nowhere. Of the candidates, I'd say he'd be my #3 after McCoy, Clements, and Dennison. I'd take him over Carmichael or Arians, though I'm not a big fan of either.

I'd be very interested to see what his offense looks like. Could be pretty innovative with some of the Canadian intricacies coming into play. They only have 3 downs to get 10 yards up there so, I don't think there's any fear of a 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense. His pass plays are probably either A) quicker to get the ball in an athlete's hand to run with the ball or B) have routes going further down the field. Also, because of the width of the field, I'd assume Trestman can get really creative with spreading the field.

One interesting thing is that CFL doesn't really have TEs. I'd wonder how he'd incorporate that position along with the FB position. I'd think a lot of H-back type formations with the TE lined up behind the line of scrimmage. That actually could benefit Evan Rodriguez more than the current offense.

If Trestman is ultimately hired, I won't hate the move in the least. I'll be very intrigued by what the offense will look like in 2013.

Honestly I'm not sure what the difference between Clements and Trestman is. You're hiring them for their history of getting a lot of of their QB. Trestman's CFL years and Clements one year as an OC are relatively meaningless.

This is a hire to try and make Jay Cutler a top tier QB.

Kind of interesting. This is the way I see my personal top 4:

Trestman- has gotten QBs with mediocre talent to play at a pro bowl level.

Clements- has gotten talented QBs to play at record-breaking HOF levels

Dennison- has gotten OLinemen and RBs with mediocre talent to play at pro bowl levels

McCoy- has gotten the most of offenses with mediocre talent.

Should this hire be about Jay solely or should it be about the offense overall? While I'd love Jay to turn into the best QB in the league, I think it's more realistic to get the most out of his abilities (may or may not lead to him being the best) and get this offense to be a consistent force.

I do agree on that setiment, which is why the Clements love scares me a little. Ideally you want a great football mind who has an ability to put a staff in place that includes a QB coach like... Clements or Trestman.

And I'd even take it a step further and say I want the HC who is best for the team, which is why the ST coaches don't necessarily put me off. And I wonder if a guy like Trestman could be brought in more as a possible OC if you brought in a ST coach.

2 Bears were named 1st Team All-Pros: WR Brandon Marshall and CB Charles Tillman. Peppers and Jennings were named to the 2nd team.

Well, I think that's good news from a couple different angles. First, he's got his crap together and second, it sounds like he's certainly not interviewing guys just to say he talked to a lot of different candidates.

I think that is very unlikely, he left the NFL because he wants to be a head coach.

This weekend couldn't have worked out better for the Bears. No more waiting necessary.

I expect things will start moving quickly come Monday morning.

from Dan Pompei:

Is Mike McCoy fading as the Bears' top candidate? He could be, and this is why:

The Broncos OC has become a hot commodity in other locales. He has been requested to be interviewed for a second time by other teams. The Cardinals now appear to be the frontrunner to land him. But new teams, including the Chargers, also are interested. The Bears, meanwhile, may be turning their attention elsewhere. 2 minutes ago

I don't really agree with his logic (other people want him? well I guess we should stop trying). Just figured I'd pass it along.

Yeah, if that's who the Bears want, then they should get him. They are the best situation for a new coach. They are the closest team to winning a championship of those looking for a coach. They got the QB in place, have some weapons (could use 1 more), have the defense.

Yeah I don't care how thorough Emery is, he can still easily botch this whole thing. The only way McCoy should move down the list is if Emery had a change of heart with which direction to take. The availability thing is crap.

The Bears played 5 games this year against teams that played this weekend. In those 5 games, the Bears scored only 53 points.

I looked at Clayton's projections, we're around 13 mill under the cap currently. 14 other teams have more money than we do, some with astronomical amounts(Cincy-55 mill, Indy 46 mill). Is keeping Melton and adding a legit LT in FA truly feasible? Peppers and Tillman almost have to renegotiate, it seems to me. Other than Hester, is there anyone we can cut that'd save us a chunk?

And yes should have beaten Seattle, and could have beaten Houston and at least one of the games against GB, possibly both.

But we got killed by SF and that's exactly who would have waxed us again had GB won that last game.

Only team you really got to worry is Indy. Cincy got like 20 FAs and they want to resign most of them back. Some of them will get a big raise like Atkins (extending him to a new contract), Andre Smith, and Michael Johnson. They will have a bunch of cap space to still sign a legit LT, but that could be lower on their priorities at the moment.
