I think I'm officially not disappointed with this offseason.

It's fun having smart guys doing things.

They might not do the dumber stuff we all secretly (or not so secretly) wish they would but they'll make good solid moves that we'll probably end up being pleased with.

I realize that's a lot of generalizing, but I want to heap praise right now.

I am really liking our pitching staff and all. It has me wondering if all of the starting pitcher pitchers that we have gained hurt the market for guys like Marmol, Garza, and Soriano given where it puts our 40 man situation? Mainly the type of packages we get in return arent going to be able to be multi prospect type deals.

GRB, I know you're reading this apparently. Because I was reading to see if you were reading this. Or something.

Anyway, two things:

1) You guys really need to look at how many losses the Cubs racked up with sub-replacement starting pitching last season. Not just below-average. Sub-replacement.

2) I'm trying to WAG a percentage chance that the Cubs finish ahead of the Cardinals in the standings next year. I'm thinking like 10-20%.

Volstad, Germano, Rusin, Raley, Wells, Berken, and Coleman made a combined 54 starts last year. That's a full 1/3 of our starts.

Just for perspective.

That's some passive aggressive horse [expletive]

10% - Maybe they'll make some amazing trade for an OF and a 3b and we'll be a playoff team!

80% - All right! This is what I expected to see from these guys.

10% - They better $@@#$ not turn around and trade Soriano and Marmol and give their jobs to Campana and Bowden.

He's entitled to rub some noses in it. He was patient and showed some faith in the front office.

Naw. Deep down I wish we signed all the free agents, too. Wasn't attempting to be a smart ass or condescending there. I guess it comes off that way, though. My bad.

I feel like last year, we said the same thing.

But then the same thing happened. The depth guys we got this time around are better than last year's Wood and Volstad, though.

Getting 4 of the top 15 SP this offseason, when so many teams had needs(many multiple) is phenomenal work. Maybe Texas panics now and gives us a decent offer for Garza? Would you deal him straight up for Olt, right now?

Given the uncertainty and our gaping hole there, I'm leaning towards yes.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. We got one year left of Garza who is a question mark in terms of absolute health and, at the very least, would probably cost us similar money to Jackson to extend at this moment in time (whether in total cost or AAV). And at this point, after Jackson and Villanueva, Garza is a luxury, not a necessity. I'll take the patient, power-hitting, solid defensive 3B with several years of team control that we desperately need, please.

Yea, I guess even if he's Mark Reynolds at the plate (though that means a lot of power), with his glove that's a really valuable player.

I've seen some writers mention they're looking at Schierholtz as a 4th OFer. If anything, my guess is the price for Soriano is sky high and it'll be hard to be pissed, if he's dealt.(I doubt he will be personally) It appears they're still looking at pen arms too, my guess is we add a bullpen arm, a backup 3B, and an OFer of some sort. Unsure if its a starter or not though. Only trade I really see is Marmol honestly, but I'm hopeful a team gets antsy on Garza in the spring. Would like to see a young player trade that nets us more pitching, guess thats a possibility still.

I thought GRB was like similar to NSBB in terms of smartness... wtf?

Yeah, it looks like its dipped somewhat since my last peek over there. It could just be a byproduct of a very slow offseason though. Kinda like how it's just WSR posting crap in every thread when it's slow around here.

Rotation: Garza-Shark-Jackson-Baker-Villanueva/Feldman

Pen: Marmol-Fujikawa-Russell-Camp-3 of Dolis/Wade/Lewis/Rosario/Rondon/Wood/Beliveau(if kept)/Bowden(AAA rotation candidate)/Cabrera(AAA rotation candidate)

Lineup: DeJesus (CF)-Castro (SS)-Rizzo (1B)-Soriano (LF)-Stewart (3B)-Schierholtz/Sappelt (RF)-Castillo ©-Barney(2B)

Bench: Valbuena(IF) Watkins? (IF) Schierholtz/Sappelt (OF) Campana? (OF) Navarro ©

Barring any additional moves, this might just end up resembling a major league baseball team. I'd still love to pull a decent bat out of a hat though.

That lineup sure could use an impact bat somewhere.... imagine if Soriano is taken out....

Is this twitter confirmed or real life confirmed?

It's not confirmed until after an alleged physical, and the Cubs can't add him until they make a corresponding couple of roster moves anyway (they can't even add Villanueva yet), so just wait for the first post in the forum to get updated by someone other than SCS with an actual confirmed link.

The dream:

2015 Opening day rotation

Price

Samardzija

Garza

Jackson

Appel

If we're dreaming, I'd rather Vizcaino pan out and trade Garza for a major young piece after a nice start to next season (although I figure you have Arodys in the Price trade).

If we are "Dreaming" I'd like to think at least one of Maples/Johnson/Underwood/Vizcaino/Paniagua maxed out their potential and was somewhere in there

Rub noses in what? Nothing has been accomplished. Nothing at all. Last year sucked and it didn't have to.

Probably. I think Olt is a little overrated as a prospect and won't be a star, but for one year left of Garza, I would. Not real excited about trying Stewart again.

I am a big fan of our FO, but this season could possibly end up being just as bad as last season. Garza and Baker are question marks, Fuji has never pitched in the states, Feldman isnt exactly a TOR pitcher, and our offense isnt in any better shape than it was last year. A whole lot of things have to go right for this team to make the playoffs this season. And at this point I dont see Bourn being the answer to our offensive problems. So we may have to lose a shark or garza type in a trade to bolster our lineup. I like the depth of assets they have created for us, but we are a still a couple of moves away from this off season being a HUGE success..
