can't believe the "don't worry, we'll throw all this extra money at hamels/cain/sanchez" plan isn't panning out.

Yea, that was definitely the plan

He played us the entire time. Wanted to stay in Detroit from the beginning.

In other words, he was a free agent

These guys are shoe ins for the "but they were in on him and made a really good offer you can't blame them for the player choosing somewhere else" award.

Or, they could get the "We believe we can better use our resources than what it will take to get him to change his mind" award.

That's not a real award.

I'm pretty sure Kyle could make it.

Jesus, how many times can one fan base be teased in such a short time span?? UGHHH

I'd love to see the Cubs move fast and turn their attention to Jackson and Villanueva.

Assuming in that case the Cubs traded Garza for offense/spects, a rotation of Samardzija, Jackson, Baker, Villanueva, and Feldman is still pretty solid and hopefully there are still some moves and resources to be invested in upgrading the offense (Bourn perhaps?).

Meh. It not only saves us $80MM, but it proves to us that when the right piece comes along, we're willing to spend.

And it doesn't hurt that it hurths the White Sox chances in their final year or 2 of contention before they have to rebuild from the ground up.

I'm not welcoming anyone, anymore to the cubs organization! #puzzled

Theo Epstein and reps from Ricketts group made face-to-face push for Anibal Sanchez yesterday in Miami. Big disappointment.

If the team being competitive was important to Anibal I would have loved to hear that spiel.

Hey look, our half-assed imitation of the post Jordan Bulls isn't working out. What a surprise.

Next thing you'll be telling me that we won't have these two waves of kickass minor league players all ready to break through at once to form the core of a roster AND provide us ammo to trade for hypothetical players.

Now is about the time when I remember why Rosenthal is the only national reporter I follow on Twitter. Bowden and especially Nightengale are just a joke.

Let's go give Edwin Jackson 4/60 and I'll be no worse for wear, personally. Adding Liriano/Marcum if they were to find a deal for Garza wouldn't upset me either.

How is there no gif of someone beating a scarecrow with a bat on google images. The internet has failed me.

Supposedly he signed 5/$80MM with Tigers.

Nightengale from Anibal's agent.

I don't normally wish injury on players, but I kind of hope his arm falls off now just to screw the Tigers for signing him.

What the hell? Why? What did Sanchez, his agent or the Tigers do wrong in this situation?

Which argument is the strawman?

Why? His agent did his job and his first choice was to stay in Detroit. It's our front office's job to not get off the phone without a deal and make sure they don't get used for leverage

It's difficult to narrow down. The "good job good effort" nonsense, the one year deal schtick, the sarcasm about a master plan to sign later free agents, the hyperbole about waiting for waves of minor league talent to start being active at the MLB level, take your pick really.

I'm not sure it's nonsense. This is now what, the third FA to go through the same process of "we've got him signed" to "we didn't get the chance to match/he used us as leverage" thing? I don't know that it's a far intellectual leap to say that this is why you don't make plans that are contingent upon multiple things going right all at relatively the same time. And it is really hyperbole to mock and question the waves upon waves of pre arb players thing? Isn't that the admitted plan of our front office?

And that's not even taking into consideration how frustrating it is to see this happen multiple times.
