But assuming that option isn't available, Stewart's a pretty good option at the price. Remember, if he's brutal, we'll have Vitters in AAA and Villanueva at AA.

Valbuena had better peripherals last season, is better defensively, has two good wrists, is cheaper, and is under more team control.

I can't get excited about Valbuena. Stewart is definitely a high risk to be anything valuable, but his potential seems much higher than Valbuena to me.

Maybe the Twins are going to overspend to get Bourn now?

Maybe, although I think they are in full rebuild phase, so I doubt it. Moving Span made sense - he wasn't going to be a part of their future when they were ready to compete, and getting a high ceiling arm in Meyer made sense. I think this was simply a case of getting too good of a deal to pass up on.

_______

I like bringing Stewart back on a non-guaranteed deal. With the weak third base market, he offers a decent option, and if he hasn't fixed things in spring, you cut the cord and move on. There really weren't that many options that looked that appealing out there.

I'd rather dig up Ron Santo's corpse, put a tape recorder around his neck playing Dave Kaplan shouting racial slurs at Starlin Castro playing on a loop, and plant his good foot in the ground five feet away from 3b, than give Ian Stewart $2 million guaranteed.

I've read some disrespectful posts on this board, but this is pretty bad. I can understand being upset about signing Stewart but this is too much.

Kyle, [expletive] you.

Sincerely,

I've read some funny posts on this board, but usually not from you. Top notch work.

@CSNMooney: #Cubs have signed pitcher Andrew Carpenter (@ACarpenter50) to a minor-league deal with an invite to big-league spring training.

Stewart and Schierholtz not official yet?

I think that's the case, since Hoyer made a face when Muskat asked him a question about Schierholtz yesterday and moved onto the next question.

Also he mentioned that he couldn't really talk about it when asked about Schierholtz in his MLB Radio interview yesterday.

Moved this here so the other thread can be strictly for the actual transactions.

To answer the question, neither Schierholtz or Stewart are official. The announcement for Schierholtz at Cubs.com says he's pending a physical, and I imagine similar procedural things are in the way of Stewart as well. Unfortunately for Tony Campana, I think he might be one of the aforementioned things in the way.

DFAing Campana seems inevitable, but you're going to have to find a MLB 5th outfielder if you are serious about Jackson starting at AAA, so it doesn't really save you a spot between now and ST.

Same with Clevenger, because his spot's going to go to a third catcher eventually anyway.

Well, they're looking for another OFer, so I definitely think Campana is gone. Last year, didn't the White Sox try to trade for him though, at the deadline? He sucks, but I guess its a remote possibility we can get a low level flyer for him, just for his speed.

I kind of think Campana has a little bit of value as a 5th outfielder. I definitely think you could get something of non-zero value for him. Plus you know there's going to be at least one team out there that loves his skill set too much.

Clevenger can be DFA'd though, likely sent to Iowa, and could be put back on if either Castillo or Navarro need to go on the DL. Until that arises, a 3rd C isn't really necessary on the 40 man, in my opinion. Personally, I expect one of Lake or Vitters and one of Jackson or Szczur to be dealt this offseason.

Well if we're getting into heavy speculation now, I'll be pretty surprised if both Vitters and Lake are on the 40 man/in the organization come March. I also think they're still on the lookout for a good OF that would push Schierholtz or (more likely) DeJesus to the bench. Really hoping that the dominoes keep falling in a way that might bring Bourn here. There's the matter of adding another SP too, so maybe Barney and Lake go to Detroit for Porcello, or Vitters goes to Miami for Nolasco, or maybe non-40 man pieces combine with Vitters/Lake for someone better(Bauer? Scherzer?). I dunno, I'm really spitballing at this point. But I think 1 SP and 1 OF are the big levers left, since other smaller changes could be easily fixed by dropping the guy they displace(Valbuena, Raley/Rusin).

Reed Johnson got $1.6 million

Oh dear God no...

plus a team option with $150k buyout

Holy [expletive] hell

from the Braves.

Trying to piece together the final product is really, really hard to do. If Soriano is dealt, you really need to vet back an OFer for him as part of the deal. I keep coming back to Dom Brown, Mayberry Jr, or Nolan Reimold. I hope we find a 3/4 for 1 type deal somewhere that saves us a couple 40 man spots. It seems odd they evidently told Marmol he'll be here Opening Day, could easily see us dealing him and cash to a team like San Diego for a Keyvius Sampson type prospect. Barney and Wood? I'll say its 60/40 one of them is gone before Opening Day. Still see us adding one really good youngster(not counting the Cubans possibly).

My guess is that Soriano and Marmol stay through the spring. I don't think we''ll see any MLB players traded this offseason from the Cubs.

If they do, I'm guessing it'll be shipping someone out to a broke team and picking up the salary.

Winter Meetings are over but I like having one thread for non-Cubs stuff.

McCarthy to the Diamondbacks, reportedly.

2 years, $15 million. I would've taken a chance on McCarthy at 2/15.

Damn, that's a really good deal. Wish the Cubs were in on that.

We evidently were in on Ludwick at the end too, meaning we had offers out to McCarthy, Grilli, and Ludwick at the same time basically. Gives me an indication theres plenty left they're wanting to get done. Nice deal on McCarthy obviously, my guess is he wanted on an immediate contender.
