Cherington was one of the candidates mentioned for the Cubs GM job when nobody was going to be brought in as president. He'd be in charge of the same thing Theo is in charge of. Baseball operations.

 

Theo's title is what had to be done to get him here.

I really can't agree. Regardless of what the media was reporting at the time, it seems as if Ricketts had his sights set on Epstein to run the broader baseball operations, and Epstein wanted to step away from the GM role.

He'd be the head guy whether he had the GM title or President title that he has... if he were GM and had an assistant GM, the assistant GM would handle that stuff he doesn't want to handle. Regardless of what the titles are, he'd still be working for the same people and the same people would be working for him.

 

And Cherington was never considered candidate to work here under Theo, so it really wouldn't be Cherington or Hoyer even if you looked at it from that perspective.

 

Cherington was being talked about here (and in the media) as a potential GM for the Cubs (when ownership publicly stated they had no plans to hire a president). Therefore we can express relief that Cherington is not in charge of our baseball operations. Theo falling into our laps took a miraculous sequence of events.

Reynolds is a complete butcher in the field. With Keppinger we at least have the option of an eventual platoon.
