I don't see the need to put that much thought into it. There's hasn't been a problem in the past. There is plenty of time to get a multi-round draft done and then at least another new 1-2 rounder leading up to the actual draft.

Yea some of those are admittedly complex and time consuming for dew, or whoever runs it. But as mentioned it did slow at times and people complained (and if memory serves others may have complained about picks being made for them too quickly).

I think the first idea though is fairly simple and would help keep things moving, while not having a huge impact. 24 hour clock. If you miss, the draft keeps moving. After say 5 picks or 48 hours past your pick, you lose it and the board consensus picks. If your merely a pick late or 12 hours late, you still have control of your pick, with fairly low odds you lost your guy.

I think the first idea was convoluted and unnecessary, and not really explained either.

Just give people a time limit. We aren't making our own teams, we're doing a mock draft, a sample of what the real draft may look like. If the guy isn't available within a reasonable amount of time, 24 hours during the the week, 36-48 hours over weekend, make the pick. This has been done here for years and it is not a problem. Sometimes 5 picks go off in a hurry, sometimes you wait a day. I don't see the issue.

Let's take an NFC North-centric look at Todd McShay's latest mock draft for ESPN.com:

5. Detroit Lions

McShay pick: BYU defensive end Ezekiel Ansah

Seifert comment: We've discussed how intriguing a prospect Ansah has already proven to be. He might not have immediate impact, which the Lions have said they want. But Ansah could eventually thrive as an edge rusher in the Lions' defensive scheme. In this mock, Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner is already off the board.

20. Chicago Bears

McShay pick: Tennessee receiver Cordarrelle Patterson

Seifert comment: The Bears want a speedy receiver but it would be difficult to call it a primary need. McShay considers Patterson one of the draft's top playmakers, however, and chose him over Alabama offensive tackle D.J. Fluker, among others. We'll see.

23. Minnesota Vikings

McShay pick: North Carolina defensive tackle Sylvester Williams

Seifert comment: General manager Rick Spielman considers this draft deep for interior defensive linemen, and the Vikings have a need there as Kevin Williams ages.

26. Green Bay Packers

McShay pick: Georgia defensive tackle John Jenkins

Seifert comment: Jenkins is a classic 3-4 nose tackle at 346 pounds. The Packers want to strengthen their defensive line, especially against the run. Jenkins would help.

If Patterson falls to 20, you have to scoop him up. It's unlikely the OL we want would be available in a scenario where Cordarelle is available.

FWIW, Fluker, Watson, and Pugh are 3 of the next 4 picks after Patterson in that mock.

Wow... Does he really think that 8 OLs will be pick in the top 25? I would think Bears would value Austin more (speed/playmaking/body of work) than Patterson, but I agree that if he's there, you take him. Patterson was also impressive in the return game and also had some carries at RB.

Patterson can do everything Austin can do but is bigger doing it. Needs work on route running, but he's a rawer version of Julio Jones. Patterson would be a steal at 20. I think Buffalo takes him at 8, unless Geno Smith is on the board.

pugh is like a third round talent.

Watson is late 2nd round talent at best also.

Patterson doesn't have Austin's body of work, but he has elite size/speed and if he's on a team that already has Marshall and a (hopefully) progressing Jeffery, he should be a beast.

Agree with Sulley and you that Pugh and Watson are reaches in the first round.

Menelik Watson is gonna sneak into the first round and seems like somebody the Bears could pick. High upside with all the measureables. Scouts and football people have been buzzing about him since before the combine. The only hesitation is that he's relatively new to football and only played 1 year.

Found this pretty interesting.

DRAFTMETRICS, though, has consistently held the belief that the draft can be divided into several groupings of selections within which all the draft selections have an equal chance of success. (These groups have been called Value Groups in past DRAFTMETRICS writings and will be referred to as such in this article.) As discussed below, this means a player selected with the 13th pick has the same chance of success as the player selected first.

The charts with the percentages are at the link. Pretty good stuff, it seems.

Jeff Backus retired today, which means we can probably start penciling in Eric Fisher at 5

Nice. More likely Milliner falls to 10.

I'm not sure Fisher gets to 5... Philly could use him for sure

LOL.

Former NFL GM Bill Polian ranked Oklahoma's Landry Jones as the top QB in the 2013 class.

Well then. Polian followed up his ranking by saying "I was at the game in Norman when he beat Tannehill head to head. This guy's a winner." We must have missed the snaps when Tannehill played defense. There's a chance Jones is a third- or fourth-round pick, but if out of rhythm and forced to work in confined space, Jones struggles immensely.

My final positional rankings.

Interesting write-up, good stuff. Also noticed you used the word we or we've a dozen times when writing up the Steelers draft info and zero with the Bears. Didn't realize you had crossed that far over to the dark side.

That's not me. A friend of mine does the Steelers specific stuff.
