@cowsarecool220: RT @RandyWehofer Congratulations to former @IowaCubs Bobby Scales. He is the #Angels new Director of Player Development. #Cubs

Wow, that's a hell of an opportunity for a substitute teacher who spent about a decade floundering through various farm systems with a cup of coffee and a stint in Japan to show for it.

Good for Bobby, that is quite the promotion (if that's what you want to call it). Pretty sure in his brief time up they talked about how great a person he was and he was a pretty smart guy. A guy with his background (meddling in the minors, Japan, sub teaching, etc.) should do well in a poisition like that and I think will bring a unique perspective.

WEDNESDAY: The deal is expected to be worth $3.5MM in guaranteed money, plus $2.5MM in roster bonuses and $1MM in incentives for games finished, Yahoo's Tim Brown writes (Twitter link). Madson passed his physical, Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times reports (on Twitter).

TUESDAY: The Angels have agreed to sign Ryan Madson to a one-year contract, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports. The deal is pending a physical.

Looks like they are going to try to turn Chapman into a starter or at least are considering it. They told him to prepare during the offseason as if he's going to be a starter (i.e. get stretched out). Smart move on their part turning him into a starter bad move having Dusty be his manager. He's gonna ride the [expletive] out of him as a starter.

Mark Reynolds signs with Cleveland and is likely to start at first base for them. 1 year, $6 million, as high as $7.5 mil with incentives.

Kevin Correia just got 2/10 from the Twins. At least our stopgaps are both better and on one year deals.

I keep forgetting he was an All-Star two years ago. He finished that season with a -0.2 bWAR. Has to be one of the worst All-Stars ever.

Anytime you can give a 32 year old pitcher, who 3 out of the last 4 years hasn't put up a fWAR over 1, a 2 year $10mm contract the season after he loses a starting job on the 22nd ranked pitching staff (going off of fWAR) for a team that lost 83 games, you just gotta do it.

Even worse than Mike Williams?

I swear Correia pitched every game I went to in 2011. Even the ones that weren't against the Pirates.

Are you sure that none of them were actually Todd Wellemeyer?

Who is Brian Lahair?

P.S. (LaHair was better)

I find it highly odd that Mark Redman finished 2006 with with a 1.6 fWAR... but he was a pretty bad All-Star, one who was only selected because of the rule. At the tie of his selection he had a 5.27 ERA

His final numbers were 11-10 5.71 ERA 1.59 WHIP 167 IP 76 K 63 BB 4.1 K/9 4.99 FIP 5.22 xFIP

Somehow that translated into a 1.6 fWAR and only a -0.1 bWAR

If Choo is dealt for Stubbs and Gregorius, I'll throw up a bit. What an awful return.

Ehh... Choo only has 1 year left and IIRC his agent is Boras. I don't think he's going to bring a good return back. It should be better than Stubbs/Gregorius, but I don't think anyone was willing to beat that package.

Looks like Wade has 2 really good years (2008&2011) and 2 really bad years (2009 & 2012.) Always had nice BB/K rates though. I like him and Lewis a lot better than the relievers they spent most of 2012 scraping off the sidewalks.

Bullpen still really needs another lefty after dfaing Beliveau. Not sure that I like JP Howell over Beliveau, but that's what I see happening.

Wood

Yeah, it seems pretty clear Wood is going to the pen, at least to start the season.

Yeah that's logical, but for whatever reason I just can't imagine Wood and Villanueva sitting in the bullpen. Granted that would make for a vastly improved pen.
