A's keep Colon, 3 mill+incentives, for a year. Evidently won't affect them keeping McCarthy. That said, if they do keep him, they'll have a bunch of pitching to deal from.

@JonHeymanCBS: bay will receive the $189 M he is owed from #mets as part of the arrangement, $16M '13 salary plus $3M '14 buyout.

That's an awful lot of money to make a guy go away, especially from a team without a ton of talent.

Where the [expletive] did Heyman get $189 million from? He's owed $21 million, and his contract was only $66 million. WTF? 189 isn't even possible to typo with any of the numbers left from Bay's contract.

EDIT: Weird mistake I guess...

@JonHeymanCBS should say: bay to receive $21 M he is owed by #mets as part of arrangement, $16M '13 sal, $3M '14 buyout, $2M bonus

He meant 18.9M. If you total his 16M in '13 and 3M in '14 that makes sense.

Well, even though that's $19 million and not $18.9 million I can see the mistake happening then

I was thinking 18.9 all along. Actually ends up being 21MM with some deferred, adding him to the list of players they'll be paying not to play for them for years to come.

A very under the radar move we missed out on that I'm pissed about was not signing Mike Olmsted. If we're going to sign Gutierrez and Putnam, this was a guy(from the Red Sox, no less), that we SHOULD have gotten. 25 years old, spent some time in Japan, throws mid 90's. Put up 39.1 innings at high A ball last year, giving up 25 hits, with a 2.29 ERA. Oh, and 8 walks with 61 K's. He sucked at AA though. Pitched 20 innings, gave up 11 hits, had a [expletive] ZERO ERA, walked 7 and K'd 31. This was a dude that likely could have been in the back end of our pen and the Brewers stole him. The few things I read all said the Red Sox were stupid not to add him to their 40 man and its kind of hard to argue that baaed on the numbers.

More proof that if you have a young son, teach him to pitch left-handed.

MONDAY: If the sides complete the deal it’s expected to be for about $18MM and three years, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports (on Twitter).

FRIDAY: The Giants and Jeremy Affeldt are in talks about a three-year contract worth $15-20MM, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports (on Twitter). Earlier tonight, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that the team was confident in re-signing the veteran left-hander.

Affeldt, 33, pitched to a 2.70 ERA with 8.1 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 63 1/3 relief innings for San Francisco this year. He added another 10 1/3 scoreless innings in the playoffs as the Giants clinched the World Series title. MLBTR's Tim Dierkes ranked Affeldt 50th in his Top 50 Free Agents ranking, predicting that he would re-sign with the team.

It's a good season to be an average to slightly above average middle relief pitcher, apparently, between the Affeldt and League contracts. Can't imagine what Soriano is going to be asking for after those two contracts.

Don't know how minor this is, but Hunter signing with the Tigers

The Tigers have agreed to sign Torii Hunter to a two-year deal, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Hunter obtains $26MM over two years, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports (on Twitter). The contract with the Reynolds Sports Management client is pending a physical.

Is it me or does that seem like a massive overpay? Or has he been better than I think the last couple years?

WAR last 3 years

Posted

This past season is a huge aberration. Most WAR he's put up in his entire career. First time he's hit over .300 his entire career. A .389 BABIP (2nd highest behind Fowler's .390) sure helped.

EDIT: More nutty aberrations stats:

- Lowest BB% since 2007 and 3rd lowest since 2002.

- Highest K% in his entire career (not counting 19 game 1998)

- Lowest XBH% he's had since 2001.

- Highest K/BB since 2001.

- Lowest AB/K in his entire career (not counting 1998)

Yet he had the highest oWAR in his entire career.

Pierre signed for $1.6 million. At that price they'll probably keep bringing him back until he's the worst player in history to get 3,000 hits.

Blue Jays Designate Joel Carreno For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 19 at 2:23pm CST]

The Blue Jays announced that they designated right-hander Joel Carreno for assignment. The move creates 40-man roster space for the players acquired in the club’s recently approved 12-player deal with Miami.

Carreno, 25, appeared in 11 games for Toronto this past season. He posted a 6.14 ERA with 6.5 K/9 and 5.7 BB/9 in 22 innings at the MLB level. In seven seasons as a minor leaguer, Carreno has a 3.48 ERA with 9.6 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9.

Not particularly notable of a move, but due to his age and minor league K/BB Rates, he reeks of an Epstein reclamation.

Just looked up Pierre on BR. I can't believe he was only with the Cubs 1 year. It seemed so...much...longer.
