I know it will never happen, but I'd really love an explanation from Theo on what went down here. Between this and the Demp trade there have simply been too many hiccups, whether they were Theo/Jed's fault or not.

What if this is about Haren's stark loss of velocity this past season? You'd be crying more foul if Haren proved to be damaged goods next April (Not that Marmol is anything but damaged goods at this point)

To be fair, Theo and company recovered very well and got Vizcaino and Villanueva. That may very well be better than what we would've ended up with.

eh, i'd probably chalk it up as a risk that didn't work out. an effective haren is going to net us a better deal than an effective marmol.

This is disappointing, to say the [expletive] least. We've really made friends with the two LA teams now too. Doubt we'll be trading with either of them for a long time. Hopefully, it doesn't hurt us in dealings with other clubs, for that matter. The only thing that sounds feasible here is Haren's medicals must be really [expletive] up. If it's anything other than that, we've [expletive] ourselves. The money being exchanged shouldn't [expletive] matter in this deal.

I don't see why any of that is true.

Teams pull out of trades when an agreement can't be reached literally the vast majority of the time. This leaked because Marmol was asked if he'd waive his NTC and then blabbed to the media about it. That doesn't mean anything was agreed on or done.

Except a lot of people with reasonably good track records were saying it was done in principle even beyond that.

So what? Do you really think Theo/Jed just frivolously pulled out of a solid trade for no reason?

If Theo came out and said we didn't like the medicals, I'd have his back 100%. I'd just like to know the reason.

I'm definitely not saying that. I'm sure there was a very good reason.

I was just disputing that a likely explanation is that there was never a trade and that Marmol was just confused and caused all of the reporting.

One thing has to happen for sure after today. Theo needs to gather every single person in the organization and tell them all to stfu until he gives them the OK to talk about any possible trades.

If that was the case, I doubt we would hear it from Theo. I can't imagine him making public comments about a player's medical reports.

They'd leak it through the media. Theo wouldn't say that on record.

You have no way of knowing if the leak actually damaged the chances of the trade happening. In fact, I'd say it's far more likely that it was irrelevant.

I feel like even that would be a huge no-no. Players would be a lot more hesitant to be involved with the Cubs and understandably so.

I'm as in favor of our FO as anyone here, but the bottom line is we've now had 2 well publicized deals fall through extremely recently. Not even saying it's our fault. Dempsters was NOT for sure, this one likely had to do with meds. But, they both happened and I can see where teams could get cold feet over a deal fallingvthrough with us. I hope not, but it is possible.

If nothing else, Theo a history of running a covert operation. If this trade isn't to be, it would mark the 3rd major leak of a "done deal" in the past 6 months.

Am I forgetting one? Dempster and this one. What else?

there's no way we get anything close to haren for marmol from another team.

there had to be an issue with haren's medical. there's no other logical explanation.

Or it was never a straight up deal to begin with and the Angels want more than we want to give up.

I don't know about that. When they are asking players to waive their NTC's and one of the traded players (Marmol) is commenting on the trade, you have to think the particulars have been decided right? Marmol doesn't seem to care, but you risk a Lamar Odom by getting the players involved too early.

Just like we don't know about the team's finances and how they're impacting Theo/Jed's approach on the rebuild we do not know what happened tonight. To definitively jump on one side or the other is just silly. Show frustration that you thought we got a steal and it didn't happen? Sure. But throw blame at the front office without knowing everything is not cool.
