A player that would make the Bulls favorites to win would have to be another top 5 caliber player in the league. Let me know when another one of those has the potential to walk in the door. THat's just stupid thinking.

If the Bulls beat Miami in this series without Rose and LeBron opts out of his deal (is that this year or next he can do that?), they could be favorites. Add Rose to this team along with the right top-30 player in the league and you have a damn good team.

Also, with a healthy Derrick Rose and Thibs, I think it's clear that this team is always a contender. So I really hate that caveat by Reinsdorf that he will only pay the tax if it puts the Bulls over the top.

Over the top means a player that gets them a championship. Nate doesn't do that. If the player or deal comes along that would, I think Reinsdorf would go into luxury tax territory. But he's not spending that to lose to the Heat.

Doesn't get them a championship? With Rose and Thibs they already have a shot at the title. The goal every year should be to build the best possible team to contend using every possible resource available. If that means Nate Robinson, or some other player, so be it.

Whoa whoa...lets not pretend that the win last night makes the Bulls title contenders. The odds are still hugely against that happening. Even if they beat the Heat in this series...that's a team whose number they've had for some reason. But Indiana beat the Bulls 3 out of 4 this season, and I can't remember the last time the Bulls have had any success against the Thunder.

This team has been more than I imagined they could be, but lets not get crazy.

That's why Reinsdorf hasn't gone into the luxury tax. I think he would have signed Dwight if Dwight wanted to come to Chicago. He's waiting for the right guy which is hard to blame. I can't blame him. Edited by Wilson A2000

I said a "healthy" Rose and Thibs makes this team title contenders. There is no reason if Rose comes back, in pre-injury form, next year that this team can't compete for a title.

Yeah, the cap situation is pretty dire and Reinsdorf has shown no interest in crossing the luxury tax threshold.

I think he's said that he'll exceed that threshold for a winner. If they take the Heat to 6 or 7 or somehow find a way to advance, that could be a factor

They've been about the same level for three years now (admittedly, I can somewhat see the point of not going over the threshold this season). His work with the White Sox and MLB CBA is just another indication that he does not care to spend much on his teams. I don't believe Reinsdorf.

The Bulls are over the threshold this year, and unless they amnesty Boozer or trade Deng to a team under the cap they will be again next year.

What if they buyout RIP?

I'm already assuming they do that.

The tax level was 70.3 million this year, and the Bulls are paying the tax since they have salaries just over 74 million.

Even without Hamilton next year the Bulls are at about 72 million for 8 players. So even with minimum salary players filling the rest of the roster, they would be in the 74-75 million range and I doubt the tax level will jump up that much. They could try to dump Hinrich to get under, but I'm not sure who would be interested, and that might not get them enough room anyway.

He said "with Rose."

Lebron can opt out after next year.

Never mind, then. As long as those three are together, Miami will be the favorite.

Andersen was pretty clearly fouling him there too.

Lebrons not coming hear. Let's not do that dance again. Think Kevin Love, though Khan getting fired almost kills that chance too.

I didn't say he'd be coming here.

To find a path to the Bulls being the favorite, though, it's necessary for him to opt out of Miami.

The problem is he'll probably head to a better place by 2014-15 than an aging Miami. Just spitballing but possibly a Cleveland where Kyrie Irving would be better than Wade by then.

Yeah. Reading comprehension fail on my part.

That's why Reinsdorf hasn't gone into the luxury tax.

That's a popular trope amongst Bulls fans. It's also incorrect.

2013 NBA Luxury Tax - $70,300,000

2013 Chicago Bulls Salary # - $74,201,011

Shout out to knowing things.

Ok you're right. But as far as getting a big name player not on the roster right now I think Reinsdorf made his intentions clear.

Andersen literally fouled every play he was on the floor.

Robinson won't be important when Rose gets back. They won't need his scoring too much. He seems to really love this team and the city from the news conference last night, but others have and left. If he's too expensive, not a huge loss. Just wait until the 'Crap what is Nate doing game.' It will come.

Yeah, he can live in Chicago after his playing days are over.

I don't know about his intentions. I wasn't calling you out either. The Reinsdorf tax aversion has been part of Bulls fandom's biggest complaints since the tax started. Considering that, I've been surprised to see their exceeding the cap fly under the radar.

The only reason they did was because no one would take Hamilton at the deadline, but still.

wouldn't they have had to match salaries?

BREAKING:

Derrick Rose may (MAY) suit up for game 3 versus the Miami Heat.

Nothing is official yet, but according to sources out of Chicago, Rose has been practicing with the team and a #RETURN in front of the Chicago crowd may be possible.

Rose may be used in a limited 'emergency' role off the bench, but his presence would be well received and appreciated.
