Nate Silver did a write up making a case for Trout over Cabrera

http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/14/the-statistical-case-against-cabrera-for-m-v-p/?smid=re-share

It may seem hard to argue against a player who won the triple crown. But Cabrera’s numbers, while worthy of an M.V.P. award in many seasons, weren’t historically great. His batting average, R.B.I. and home run totals would also have qualified for the American League’s triple crown in 2008. Before that, however, you would have to go back to 1972 to find a year in which his numbers were good enough to lead the league in all three categories.

Perhaps 10 or 20 years ago, when evaluations of base running, defense and clutch hitting were murkier, stat geeks would have argued that Cabrera deserved the M.V.P. on the basis of the hard evidence.

Now that some of the “intangibles” have become measurable, we know that Trout did more of the little things to help his team win.

It’s the traditionalists who are using statistics in a way that misses the forest for the trees.

ESPN's MVP votes plus comments are the most hilarious and on-point difference between statistical analysis and old-school thinking that I've ever seen.

The pennant race/playoff team argument is as dumb as the RBI argument to me, if not more dumb. The Angels were in a "penant race" until about the last 1-2 weeks of the season and had a better record than the Tigers and would have made the playoffs over the Tigers if they were in the same divison.

What Cubs writer put Hunter Pence in his top 10? Law and Neyer are making fun of it.

Padilla.

Geez, he also voted Braun first.

Looks like the only Cub to receive any sort of votes for any postseason award was Alfonso Soriano receiving 8 voting points for MVP.

I don't really understand why they vote for as many players for MVP as they do. Why doesn't everyone just vote for, say...top 2. That should surely be enough to break any ties. Voting down to 10th place seems ridiculous.

So you end up with opinions dominating that no one is still using to make actual baseball decisions. #getourbacksTheo

GMs & asstGMs use stathead work & certainly know Trout more valuable, but won't comment on the record to back up public statheads....

It is dumb, my only guess is that it was negotiated in the labor agreement so guys can use finishing in x spot within the 10 gets them some sort of bonus.

No.... The agreement with the union/league.

And how would that come into play with the BBWAA voting process?

Now that I think of it I doubt the voting process was created by the league/union. They just use the BBWAA rules within their own agreement for compensation/bonuses. Every year you see guys with bonuses in their contracts if they finish in the top 5 of MVP voting.

Raul Ibanez got an MVP vote. Seriously, a LF/RF/DH butcher who hit .240 .308 .453 .761 got a vote. The world is stupid.

Sad thing is I know the writer who gave him a vote and have met him a few times. He's a really good writer/a pretty smart guy, so I'm shocked by that.
