Didn't a bunch of you weirdos want Valentine for the Cubs?

I said he wouldn't be a bad choice because he does well with young teams. He was a terrible choice for Boston with a veteran team and following a beloved guy like Francona.

He's not a bad baseball manager under the right circumstances, he just wasn't a good fit for Boston and especially so following Francona.

???? He had a young team for half a year in Boston. Valentine is a horrible choice for ANY team, and I would wager he has managed his last MLB game.

Edit: I would also wager that nobody will hire him as a broadcaster again either, he was equally inept at that.

this is off topic, but whatever happened to larry dierker? had a .556 winning percentage and the astros won the division 4 out of 5 years under him, but they always underperformed in the playoffs and he got canned. seems like a guy who should've been given a shot elsewhere.

He is the community outreach executive for the Astros. Saw him at the draft this year.

Quite a few people brought him up here, me included, but I guess he just decided to stay away for health reasons. What did he have during that Padres game, an aneurysm? That final press conference was pretty intense, and I remember an interview afterwards where he sounded really burned out.

right, but that was in 1999. he recovered to manage later that year and then managed the astros in 2000 and 2001. maybe he's just attached to that area and the organization, but on paper he'd look like a guy who was successful, had good ideas and should have managed another ballclub.

The press conference and interview I was talking about were after the 2001 season. He sounded pretty fed up with being a manager.
