I threw him out there because Arizona almost definitely will be trading an OFer and theres been speculation it'll be him. He'll be making 8.7 mill next year, has an 11 mill team option after that and has some power. Which Sveum said he wants anyway. I doubt he'd cost us much, in terms of prospects, and has had some solid seasons. I figure he's a decent stopgap for us, while we're rebuilding.

Could be a decent stopgap, and a possible reclamation-turned-mid-season-deal, too. Totally agree that the price - assuming the receiving team takes on all of the financial obligations (as the Cubs would) - would be negligible.

It's a shame he got injured so early on in the season, he started off the year as one of the best hitters in the majors. He did have a strong finish to the season. From August 12th (a day after his AVG dipped to .209) until the end of the year he finished up with a .291/.330/.488/.818 line.

Unless he was really hurt last year, I'm not sure he'd be that much of a better stopgap than BJax.

2.8 fWAR in 101 games this year, 4.6 in each of the two seasons prior.

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere, but it's from the day Ben Wells signed and states in a nut shell that we can add Wells to Soler, Szczur, and Concepcion on the list of guys with little to no chance of seeing the big leagues to the 2013 40 man roster.

LInk not working, but from Bleacher Nation, and confirmed by Arizona Phil per the poster:

(Ben)Wells, who will turn 18 on Sept. 10, was the seventh-round pick of the Cubs. He signed Monday evening for $530,000. As is standard with Major League contracts for players coming right after high school, the contract includes a commitment by the Cubs to pay for four years of college. But it also includes an unusual provision that guarantees that in 2013, Wells will be included on the Cubs’ 40-man roster. That means he’ll go to spring training with the Major League club that spring with a chance to make the 25-man roster.

Szczur has a solid chance of making it to the big leagues in 2013.

ugga. Really? Why? He'll turn 24 so he won't be that young, but he's only got 1000 professional PA of largely uninspiring performance. If he's got a chance to be a 4th OF why not just wait until 2014 at least so you get the entirety of his prime at dirt cheap prices without the worry of theoretically wasting his performance in the minors (like some may say they did with Rizzo).

Much of what the new regime has stressed is player develpement, which I'll assume hinges strongly on not rushing guys who arent quite ready. If Szczur were to be called up at some point this season, my guess is that he'd become a right handed Sam Fuld, and we already have Sappelt, who's a better, right handed Sam Fuld. This isn't to say that he could not continue to develope, but certainly not worth the ticking clock.

There seems to be some legitimacy to the idea that the Mets might trade David Wright this offseason if he doesn't agree to an extension. ABTY over at PSD says the Cubs have legit interest.

Do we even have a package that would net a player of his quality? Because I cannot begin to describe how much want I have for this.

I don't think we have the package. I think a team trading a guy like Wright wants talent that is closer to major league ready.

Of course we have a package to get him. Honestly, with only one year of control, I doubt it'd be as brutal as your thinking it'll be. If we start with Baez, we could definitely get him. But I'm not sure we'd even have to.

I agree. This isn't David Wright circa 2008, either (granted the new park has had a hand in that). I'm confident the Cubs could offer a package that didn't include Baez.

He's coming off a 7.8 fWAR season at one of the thinnest positions around the league and on the FA market. He can't be that cheap.

No one said he would be cheap, but a "not cheap" package doesn't necessarily have to start with a #1 prospect.

The ability of the Cubs to put together a package drops off quickly after that.

Agreed, but what about something centered around Samardzija??

True, but I think a good package could still be cobbled together from the rest of our top 15.

Shark has a NTC.

I thought Shark's NTC is over with now? As far as Wright goes, I think a package that includes Barney and Wood, along with 3 of Brett, Vitters, Villanueva, Vogelbach, Amaya, Torreyes, Hernandez, and Candelario would be very competitive. I figure the Red Sox, Seattle, Anaheim, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Cards would be the competition. Seattle, Arizona, and the Cards could blow us away, if they really had to have him. The Dodgers could send a nice package and take on Johan or Bay as well, which would be appealing for the Mets. Of course, we could do that too and our system is stronger than the Dodgers as well.

Why would the cardinals be in on Wright when they have a good third base guy locked up for cheap? Especially with raises coming to several guys including Wainwright?

Samardzija's NTC should be over with now. It was tied to the old contract, and the Cubs declined Samardzija's option last year for that contract.

Yeah, I threw them in there in case they don't like Freese going forward. Him and Wright are only months apart in age. They'll be losing Carpenters contract soon and have enough young pitching to replace him cheap. They're the least likely of any of the teams I mentioned for sure.
