"If the Marlins hit a grand slam, Bea Arthur appears." Deshaies, on home run sculpture at Marlins Park.

I'm not sure why but I find that ridiculously funny.

"As manager, you have to go 7 innings before you get tossed to qualify for the win. Mills is in line for win & Pettini can get the save." JD

"That pitch was up, but then most pitches are up for Altuve." Deshaies

"He has a high pitchability quotient. The HPQ. Don't look it up. I made it up." Deshaies, praising Jordan Lyles.

"He's a hot sacrifice bunter right now. You cannot pop him up in these situations." Deshaies, on NL sac bunt leader Johnny Cueto.

Brownie: "What would you do if you were Commissioner?" JD: "I'd make myself Commissioner for life."

Deshaies: "This is one of those games that needed a balk"

"Buy one, get one kid free for anyone 21 or older." JD, on Astros "Kids Free All Summer" program that starts next Monday.

Ok, Deshaies is brilliant.

This might be the best part of that blog post...

Every sportscaster has a shtick of some kind. Milo talks about everything but the actual game that is being played. Brett Dolan and Dave Raymond shout in attempts to make games sound exciting. Bob Costas thinks he's funny. Joe Buck is a pompous twit. Mark Grace acts like he's on the Jim Rome show. Tim McCarver is the grand old guardian. And Joe Morgan tells stories involving himself which might not have actually happened.

I feel that a good broadcast team adds to baseball more than it does in any other sport because of the laid back atmosphere that baseball has. I hope he is as good as the praise he is receiving from the board.

If you have doubts, go read the reaction on Astros message boards.

Basically, he does everything Bob did well, but better. I've listened to him quite a bit over the years in EI, and he really is that good, imo.

Worth it just for the furious meatball responses on the Cubs' Facebook posting about this.

who did people want? sutcliffe?

Basically any ex-Cub you can think of, including some that are dead.

Oh, and there was an ongoing debate about whether the Cubs or the WS had a better announcing team, with quite a few Cubs fans bemoaning that they didn't have Hawk and Stone.

Not that I want to take the focus of this thread away from the Deshaies hiring, but I never understood why Brenley wasn't brought back. Anyone know why?

He chose to leave.

Some say he just wanted to go to AZ, others have said he wanted more money from the Cubs.

Either way, this couldn't have worked out better. Deshaies is an upgrade.

I'm sure most here don't like The Boers and Bernstein show on the Score, but while listening to them yesterday, Bernstein mentioned that his Cubs guy indicated the reason that Brenly isn't coming back is b/c the Cubs wanted to go in a different direction and bring in a guy that doesn't over-the-top criticize the Cubs players like Brenly did at times.

Regardless, Deshaies seems like a great hire and I'm looking forward to watching next year!

I like the B&B show (mainly Bernstein) but I don't believe any of their "sourced" information.

Completely agree. Boers is bad, Bernstein can be very good, but neither of them have impeccable sources, imo.

Because he sucked at his job, just less so than others. The only reason to keep him was that there were horrifically worse options. No one will miss Brenly.

I agree with Bittner. There was nothing particularly good about Brenley. I think Len brought out the best in him.

Yea. I didn't like him much. That doesn't mean nobody will miss him, though. It's not like he was Joe Morgan.

Right. I liked him, I get that many didn't, but biittner was way over the top there.
