this series pretty much sums up the talent defecit theo has talked about

I couldn't agree more. We have a long way to go...and it's gonna be awhile as our farm system sucks

Yet the Cardinals just pull studs like Craig, Jay, Schumaker, and Freese out of their ass. Screw that.

One of these things is not like the others.

I meant Schumaker, but Jay has been pretty meh this year. Skip has been pretty good so far this year, but nothing in his track record leads me to believe it's anything but an outlier. Freese, Craig and Jay have been the only in that group that have actually been good, and Jay only moderately so. Skip has been just a hair above replacement level.

Oh ok, I just knew Jay was sort of a high pick (supplemental-3rd round or so) and thought maybe that's what you meant. But yes, Skippy is certainly the worst of that bunch.

I'd love if we could just throw relievers into our rotation at random and get the kind of results STL gets with it.

These last 2 games make me want to go into 2011 mode and not watch baseball for the rest of the summer

That's where I'm at right now too. I finally get a chance to watch a couple of games, and this is what I get to see.

2015, or whenever they are going to field a decent team again, can't come soon enough.

No doubt.

LaRussa and Duncan were also great at taking guys that struggled and turning them into very good pitchers. Welch, Stewart, Eck, Moore, etc.... Looks like that is continuing with Matheny and his regime.

Lance Lynn wasn't a journeyman, but he was a middling pitching prospect whose MLB performance pretty easily outpaces the entirety of his minor league performance. He was a college draftee that was thought of as a finished product, so he wasn't exactly a raw hunk of clay they were able to mold over time either.

Rizzo has gotten a hit in 18 of his 21 games this year. Pretty sweet.

Hasn't gotten an XBH since before the ASB though. Overall if this is the "pitchers adjusting" period, he's handling it pretty damn well.

How on earth did we end up five games ahead of the Astros? We should have started the fire sale sooner :(

When a team has a stretch where they lose 19 of 21 games, it's pretty tough to keep pace with them.

On another note, just saw a clip of the Cubs players clicking their heels today in honor of Santo. Pretty cool.

Here's some of the Cubs in Super Hero garb. I could be wrong, but I think that Captain America is Dolis, meaning that this couldn't have been taken long before he was informed of his demotion. The thought of Hellboy Sveum breaking the news to Captain America Dolis reminds me of the episode of The Office where Michael has to fire the guy at the Halloween party.

These were taken yesterday after the game, so I don't think that is Dolis.

Soriano as Batman and Castro as Robin...how sweet.

Somewhere Kaplan is saving this picture to his computer to use as fuel to the fire for his next article bashing both Soriano and Castro

Beliveau took Dolis' costume.
