Well, he may be available, what do you think? He's24, so there's not a window he doesn't fit in for us. He may have a degenerative shoulder condition and he'll cost a TON in return. Still, this is the exact type of guy you have to go after, right? Personally, I hope they hold onto him for another year, when we'll be in better position to make a deal like this. Some teams could blow us out of the water right now, on what can be offered. That said, Arizona probably would want hitting in return, since their pitching looks to be in great shape. Is Baez, Vogelbach, Brett, and Alcantara enough? I kind of doubt it, but I'd do it and not think twice assuming the shoulders OK.

If he has a degenerative shoulder condition I want nothing to do with him.

Our best hitting prospects are probably to young/far away from being ML ready for the D'Backs to do a deal with us. I'd think they would want near ready ML prospects or at least guys who have a better/longer track record in the minors and are at least in AA. Best chance to get him would probably be using guys we get in a Garza and Dempster trade and then add in Baez/Candelario/etc. as the high ceiling low level guy

I'd give them Soriano AND Reed Johnson

Benefit of the doubt since it was a different thread, but this joke has run its course.

The shoulder would scare me. Personally I think pitching has to be a higher priority for the front office and I would use the prospects to get a TOR guy. A good argument could be made either way but I would pass.

Apparently, the Pirates are on him.

Can you imagine adding Cole/Taillon to Bauer/Skaggs/Bradley?

Even I it hadn't, Reed Johnson's hitting .302 with an .804 OPS, so I assure you thy their will be some inquiries on him. He wouldn't bring back more than a Hunter Cervenka, or whatever the name of the 1B we got in the Theo trade was, on his own, but don't be surprised if he's moved with Dempster or Garza.

Nobody's calling about Reed Johnson.

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets traded. There won't be much return, though.

Even if we did, I'm not sure I would want to give up what it would take to get him. There's just not enough quantity of high quality in the system right now, and we'd have to supplement this move with major FA signings for it to make sense.

That said, I don't think we have the chips to get him either. Although ... I do think we could make it quite interesting. A package of say, Baez/Candelario/BJax/Vitters would have to grab some attention (Davidson isn't a lock to stick at 3rd, although he's probably a slightly better bet than Vitters), if they wanted to go hard after bats.

Given what RammyFanny just posted, I tend to think our chances of acquiring Upton would depend heavily on their view of Vitters. We don't have a SS anywhere close (unless you count Lake as one and Vitters is a better prospect anyway) and obviously don't have a TOR type pitcher in the system. Thus, the deal would have to be build around Vitters. There would obviously be much more than just Vitters as the centerpiece, but if they're looking specifically for those three things, I think they'd have to really like Vitters.

On the other hand, any chance they'd have any interest in some variation of a Garza for Upton deal? There would have to be more parts included on both sides (much more by the Cubs I'd guess), but maybe something built around Garza and Vitters from the Cubs for Upton and something from the Diamondbacks? Random idea and might be a bad one, but it gives them a TOR pitcher and a near-MLB ready third baseman.

I'm guessing they'll want the centerpiece of the deal to be under control for more than 1.5 years. Maybe not but I think they could get a better deal than that from someone else.

Garza for Upton might be a starting point. I don't think they are looking for prospects, but I could be misreading it.

That's where their opinion of Vitters comes in. If they feel like he's a long way away, we probably don't have a chance. But if they think he can be in the majors by the start of 2013 and stick, then him still being a prospect may not be a negative since they'd also be getting an established TOR pitcher with 1.5 years of team control left.

They probably could, but I think a Garza/Vitters combo might at least keep us competitive with most teams.

Doubt it. Any Upton talks would likely start (and end) with Castro.

If the D-Backs are holding out for a Castro talent in return, they won't be trading Justin Upton to anyone. He's signed to a 3/38.5M deal after this season and there are concerns about his shoulder.
