I love Wood, but I don't really want his number retired. Maybe don't give it out to any old hack like we do with 21 nowadays but I wouldn't retire it.

He pitched one of the greatest games of all time, second all-time in K/9, 10th all-time in H/9, was a key part of some of the best Cubs teams in recent times and was a fan favorite(which I think matters for team honors). Just because he doesn't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame doesn't mean he wasn't an all-time great Cub.

If they retire Kerry Wood's number, we will be a further laughingstock. I would say the following people would have a better claim to get their number retired by the Cubs:

Sammy Sosa

Mark Grace

Lee Smith

And maybe:

Carlos Zambrano

Ryan Dempster

Aramis Ramirez

Bittersweet feeling. The 20 K game was the best single game pitching performance in Chicago history. One of my absolute all time favorite players in any sport. Sadly, will always be a what if next to his career.

Thanks Kerry.

The was the best game ever pitched in the history of baseball. Never have seen anything like that movement in my life. Sad to see him go.

Maybe CSN or MLBN will replay that game sometime soon with him retiring?

He's All 20 on Youtube at least.

That curveball to Dave Clark at the 1:25 mark is just unbelievable.

Now that was a curveball of doom

This is a sad day.

His 20 strikeout performance in 1998 was the pinnacle for me. I remember being giddy about getting the chance to see Kerry as a young phenom pitching that day against Houston. I was talking him up to my family before the game and he did not disappoint.

Looking at the boxscore from that day, he gave up a single infield hit and a HBP (of course it was a well-armored Craig Biggio). Cubs outfielders had only two chances all day. Wood had a GSc of 105, which is the highest GSc for a nine-inning game in major league history.

I hope he gets the opportunity to work for the organization in some fashion.

No one is going to laugh if we retire Wood's number. In a world where the Heat have retired MJ's number, the Rays have retired Boggs' number and the Indians have ensured that no player will ever wear the number 455 for them again, the retiring number thing is not that meaningful to fans of other teams.

And for gods sake, we wouldn't want to do ANYTHING that would make other teams laugh at the Cubs. We command such a high level of respect currently, we wouldn't want to ruin that.

There are plenty of laughs to go around -- those decisions don't change anything about the Cubs's decision. Retiring Wood's number would be stupid.

It absolutely would not be stupid. Freaking out about it would be though.

Who's freaking out? The Cubs have treated number retirement as a team hall of fame. I love Kerry, but he doesn't belong in that group.

Now that was a curveball of doom

Early Kerry's curveball was the epitome of curveball of doom.

Still the best single game performance I've ever seen, and that's the best breaking ball I've ever seen.

A couple of his games in 2003 were amazing, including the one where he also hit a HR. Isn't he also known for pushing forward the pitch count management movement? He's one of the most well known cases of a HS kid made to throw a ridiculous amount of pitches.

Never lived up to the overall hype, but some of those flashes were amazing. Hope he finds a way to stick in baseball or has successful in other ventures.

Ryan Dempster? Why don't we just throw Ted Lilly on there too.

Poll: do you want to retire Wood's number or do you want to be permabanned?

Definitely Aramis, as well as Grace, like him or not. Sosa too I guess, but put an asterisk next to it.

No to Grace, maybe to Aramis, yes to Wood.

Aramis is a definite no. Derrek Lee is more likely.

@thekapman, is that you?

I "get" why meatballs would want Grace's number retired even if it is ridiculous; he personifies basically all of the ludicrous, contradictory things they think they want in player. Lee makes no sense at all.
