Josh Hamilton Free Agency talk already starting, and Jeff Passan of Yahoo has the Cubs a distant 3rd behind Texas and the Dodgers in the sweepstakes. He'll be 32. How much is he even worth? Teams might be more hesitant now to throw huge money and years at a 32 year old.

Chicago Cubs, 12/1: As big of a darkhorse as a club with the game's third-highest revenue can be. Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer dipped their toes in the Prince Fielder derby, and with Hamilton likely fetching less than Fielder's nine years and the Cubs' outfield wide open, he'd be a great player to rebuild around.

If they could get him for something like 5 years I'd be all for it. I'm terrified of what is going to happen to his body as he gets older after what he's put it through.

I'm already wary of what condition his body is in considering he's missed significant time (25+ games) in each season since 2008.

He's going to command a huge salary, he'll be one year closer to his mid 30's, and he's a huge injury liability. I don't really care if he's a great hitter, or even the best hitter right now... it will fade quicker than it will last, IMO.

Pass.

as a chronic alcoholic and drug user, knowing how it treats a body as it ages, i wouldn't go past 3 years

Just wait until he crashes into the brick wall at Wrigley.

Speaking of Upton he's not having a very strong contract season a month and a half in.

BABIP is slightly below his career average (.315, career .327)...slash line is not terrible offensively...260/.333/.397 with a .333 wOBA and a 115 wRC+....fangraphs not liking his fielding or baserunning so far...21 K's in 87 PAs.

Sucks Hamilton used to do crack because otherwise he's exactly the kind of talent to spend big money on. Unfortunately he did do that, but I'd be more than happy to bring in Upton instead as well.

Yeah, if it wasn't for the drug past and current fragile body, I'd be all for going after Hamilton. But it's just not a smart gamble.

What if he could be had for 4/100?

Fans always throw out these types of contract ideas for superstars but they never actually happen. Someone will give him 7 years and $170 million.

Yes, but in his case he's a superstar who used to smoke crack. I do agree that someone will take the leap. Hopefully it's those big bad Dodgers.

I'm hoping the Dodgers get Hamilton, because it'd certainly decrease their chances at Hamels. My gut tells me Hamilton stays put though.

Anybody worried about bringing Hamilton from Arlington to Wrigleyville?

No more worried than I was to bring Milton Bradley from Arlington to Wrigley. Or Marlon Byrd.

I read that to assume he was referring to the nightlife?
