"I think you see that smile on my face," Harper said on MLB Network. "I'm definitely very excited to have him. Being able to play for a guy like Dusty, somebody that's been there, been around the game for a long, long time. Played for the Dodgers early. Being able to do the things with him, try to learn from him.

"Also, learning from a guy in Davey Lopes, one of the best first base coaches in the game and one of the best baserunning coaches in the game also. I'm very excited for that.

"And also (new pitching coach) Mike Maddux, being able to pick his brain about pitchers and seeing the tendencies the other pitchers throw with. I'm very excited to have the team that we do. We finally have an all-star staff and it's gonna be a lot of fun."

I have no doubt that the Nationals will win a lot of games, but it won't be because of Dusty.

It's horribly tragic that he died so young, but odds are it's going to come out that drugs are involved. A 29-year-old suffering "catastrophic organ failure" due to natural causes is pretty damn rare.

There was a tweet from an anon twitter account that it was cocaine OD.

Also read that he was deeply depressed after his brother's death.

Sort of threw Williams under the bus, and probably rightfully so.

Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly says his team’s payroll will drop from its $300MM threshold in 2015 to much closer to the $200MM level, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. The vast Dodger payrolls of the first few years under the Guggenheim group’s ownership were meant to ensure the team could stay competitive while rebuilding the farm system, and once this young talent starts to emerge, the spending will drop. Boehly thinks “sustainable is more like the league average [payroll], plus some, or plus a lot.” As Shaikin notes, this still leaves the Dodgers with the flexibility to maintain a payroll at or near the luxury tax level every year.

Wow...I wonder if that takes them off of Greinke/Price/Heyward.

Naaa...we couldn't be that lucky.

For Greinke specifically, Brett mentioned this piece today: http://espn.go.com/blog/losangeles/dodger-report/post/_/id/17773/offseason-preview-10-dodgers-storylines-to-watch

The Dodgers are looking to get younger, and another mega-contract makes that more difficult. Also, team president Stan Kasten has a blanket policy against extending pitchers beyond a certain number of major-league pitches and Greinke, who has been durable throughout his career, has thrown more than 33,000.

Also, most people assume Greinke wants to come back, but his distaste for a culture that let Yasiel Puig ignore team rules for several seasons is believed to be a factor in his thinking. It will be painful to break up one of the greatest one-two pitching combinations in recent baseball history, but Clayton Kershaw probably won’t have Greinke as a teammate next season.

i really think we're gonna get greinke

Cubs' Opening Day game will be at 10 p.m. ET per that announcement and will air on ESPN2 in addition to locally.

I'm a meh on that announcement. I always liked that almost everyone started on Opening Day, but it will be cool to have baseball back a day early.

Awesome except for the fact that the only broadcasts on FOX affiliated networks are the Saturday games that are already streamed in market.

I thought Comcast would be quicker to do this considering they've had an agreement with the NBA to stream in market for 2 years now.

Pleasantly surprised Harper won MVP unanimously. Figured at least one voter would pick someone else for some dumb reason.

Mike Trout didn't win the MVP, but is the GOAT through age 23.

My favorite part: In his first four years in the league he has accumulated more WAR than 96.9% of all players in baseball history did in their careers.

per fWAR, 40.6% of position players have negative WAR for their career.

That feels like it might point to a flaw in how they are measuring replacement level.

Or really poor personnel decisions by uninformed boobs.

Plus a lot of cup of coffee drinkers.

The cup of coffee guys on average should be replacement level. Yes, it's possible that bad decision making is the explanation. I think it's more likely something like "We don't have a good way to do defensive data before 1980 so everyone who played a high-demand defensive position who was below-average offensively comes out looking horrible."
