First time I ever heard of "meme" thought it was pronounced "Mee Mee" or "May May". I may have eventually come around to the right pronunciation on this, but I'm still sticking with a hard G for gif, and [expletive] anyone that says different.

Still don't get why people don't just say the letters in GIF like every other 3 letter acronym (USA, GOP, NBA, LED, POW, etc).

There's other computer/internet related acronyms that are that way too...*shrug*

pronounced with each letter individually or as a word? because there's definitely differences in how those are handled; "lol' is always said "l-o-l" but ram is just ram. dos can be dos when referring to the operating system, but it's d-o-s when referring to a denial of service attack. gui is pronounced "gooey". faq is f-a-q. gif is pronounced jif unless you learned about the file format because of memes or don't have the awareness to realize that making the noise "gif" with your mouth sounds like an involuntary body function and not a word that is being used to communicate something

All of the ones I listed, while not always, are frequently pronounced as words...including lol and faq, as have been discussed earlier in the thread.

And Gif should be pronounced with a hard G unless you say the word "gift" as "jift".

yeah but i'm not going to defer to blatant wrongness simply because it came earlier in the chronological timeline. a handful of rubes debasing themselves by saying FACK out loud and devoid of irony doesn't make it valid usage, regardless of the frequency

comparing .gif to gift is a false equivalency. you're assuming some sort of universality of pronunciation that just doesn't exist. and as ssr pointed out, there are clear examples that directly contradict this, even if there is some convention that would dictate otherwise. lastly, the actual guy who invented gif's has weighed in on its pronunciation and has consistently and repeatedly confirmed that it's a soft g. this isn't a matter of interpretation; it's pronounced "jif"

Some of those you are fine with, but "lol?" I have never heard anyone actually say "lawl." Well, the word exists, but it's usually just written on forums as an extremely sarcastic way to say "lol." A quick look on forums pretty much echo's my sentiments.

So if you were reading aloud a text you got from somebody, you would say "lawl" over "l-o-l" and the person you were talking to would know what you mean? Maybe you are right and I'm in the dark on this. But in my head "lawl" sounds like some word from the south and I'm imagining you reading "lawl" out loud in Matthew Mcconaughey's voice with a deep southern drawl.

I'm aware, and I don't give a [expletive]. He invented Graphics Interchange Format...hard G on graphics, btw. That doesn't somehow give him license on the pronunciation of the acronym...especially when the whole argument in this thread is that we shouldn't be pronouncing them as words at all anyway.

At the very least, there's much disagreement about it.

The creator of the GIF image format, Steve Wilhite of CompuServe, when deciding on the pronunciation, said he deliberately chose to echo the American peanut butter brand, Jif, and CompuServe employees would often say “Choosy developers choose GIF(jif)”, playing off of Jif’s television commercials. If you hear anyone pronounce GIF with a soft G, it’s because they know something of this history. If the Jif peanut butter company never existed, he would have never pronounced GIF with a soft G.

I don't have an opinion on gif or jif (because it should be g-i-f damnit), but when I hear jif, I don't think of the peanut butter I think of "be back in a jiff" or whatever that trash saying is.

nato. pronounced nay-toe. stands for north atlantic treaty organization, not north ate-lantic treaty organization. nasa. pronounced nah-suh. stands for national aeronautics and space administration, not national aeronautics and space uh-dministration. cern. pronounced surn. stands for conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire, not sonseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire. hopefully you get my point here

if you invent something, you get to name it pretty much always. to say otherwise is ridiculous. he named it gif, pronounced jif. that's its' name

also i never argued that tech acronyms shouldn't be pronounced as words as a rule. in fact, i pointed out that it depends on what it is and the context

what an astoundingly horrible argument. if only we were to live in some grey, phantasmagoric soviet nightmare where jif peanut butter doesn't exist, we would then have license to pronounce .gif with a hard g?

Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly says his team’s payroll will drop from its $300MM threshold in 2015 to much closer to the $200MM level, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. The vast Dodger payrolls of the first few years under the Guggenheim group’s ownership were meant to ensure the team could stay competitive while rebuilding the farm system, and once this young talent starts to emerge, the spending will drop. Boehly thinks “sustainable is more like the league average [payroll], plus some, or plus a lot.” As Shaikin notes, this still leaves the Dodgers with the flexibility to maintain a payroll at or near the luxury tax level every year.

Wow...I wonder if that takes them off of Greinke/Price/Heyward.

Naaa...we couldn't be that lucky.

Heyman says Dodgers will continue to spend big for now. So it basically comes down to who to believe, Dodgers ownership who has a vested interest in preventing their team from looking like they'll pay anything in negotiations or Heyman who is Boras's mouthpiece and obviously has his own interests.

Am I the only Cardinal fan who realizes that Randal Grichuk is a RH Colby Rasmus (apparently the worst player of all times) if things go well for him? Seeing a lot of usually smart people being hilariously bullish on him.

Literally every Cardinal fan I know in real life is convinced he's Kris Bryant good.

http://mlb.nbcsports.com/2015/12/08/dusty-baker-on-the-aroldis-chapman-allegations-i-dont-believe-reports/

NASHVILLE — Dusty Baker just spoke for his Winter Meetings media availability. Most of it was about the Nationals. Then someone asked him about one of his former players with the Reds, Aroldis Chapman. The same Aroldis Chapman who is alleged to have been involved in a domestic violence altercation with his girlfriend that involved eight gunshots, choking and a response by multiple police cruisers.

Baker admitted at the outset that he had not read Jeff Passan’s article at Yahoo which contained the actual police report. Based on that and that alone he may have been better-advised to have offered no comment and moved on. He didn’t, however, instead addressing serious allegations against Chapman by saying “I don’t believe reports,” suggesting that Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy “needs to go further than the player,” and that “ometimes abusers don’t always have pants on.”

Rather than paraphrase, I’ll just offer up the transcript taken from the just-concluded interview, courtesy of ASAP Sports Transcripts.

Q. Dusty, you had Aroldis Chapman when he broke into the majors. What was that process like? Were you surprised by the report?

DUSTY BAKER: I don’t believe reports. Who knows why? I’m not one to judge on how the whole thing happened.

Q. What do you know about the guy?

DUSTY BAKER: Oh, he’s a heck of a guy. I mean, a heck of a guy. I’ll go on record and say I wouldn’t mind having Chapman. No, no, he is a tremendous young man with a great family, mom and dad, and what he went through to get here and what his family had to go through to get here. I was with him through the whole process.

There was a couple times when I had to stop him from quitting or going back to Cuba because he was lonely for his family. So I went through a lot of stuff with Chapman. I got nothing but love for the young man.

Q. Were you surprised by — I don’t know how much you read about the allegations.

DUSTY BAKER: I didn’t read it.

Q. Are you surprised that this popped up?

DUSTY BAKER: I don’t read most of the stuff you guys write. No, I don’t.

Q. I believe you. I didn’t know if you heard anything.

DUSTY BAKER: I heard it from my son. I mean, who’s to say the allegations are true, number one. And who’s to say what you would have done or what caused the problem.

Q. Dusty, do you believe that it’s a good thing that baseball now has a domestic policy?

DUSTY BAKER: Yes.

Q. Domestic violence policy?

DUSTY BAKER: Yeah. I think it’s a great thing. I mean, I got a buddy at home that’s being abused by his wife. So I think this policy needs to go further than the player. I think the policy should go to whoever’s involved. Sometimes abusers don’t always have pants on.

I think we need to get them both in a room and try to come up with something. It’s a bad situation. That’s the first thing my momma told me when I was a kid. Don’t hit a woman, even my sister. Man, I was like you better leave me alone before I tell my momma.

It’s a bad situation. I learned that young, but a lot of people maybe didn’t learn that.
