That is quintessentially Cardinals. So much to celebrate, but unable to do so without a weird obsession about those teams that couldn't and don't claim to have been near as good.

It's almost as if they're rivals in a competitive sport or something.

The graphic by itself is nothing really, it's just emblematic of the fanbase's attitude as a whole. Our STL area posters likely know what I mean, there's a weird hang up about the Cubs that goes beyond 'they're our rivals, we want them to do poorly'.

white sox fans do it to, and they're not even rivals. i think our team is just easy to hate on, and doing so is a vibrant cottage industry

it is said so often that it seems cliche, but it really is true...a significant portion of that trash fan base gets more excited at cubs failure than white sox success.

I don't know; I see that about them or the Reds or the White Sox a lot, and it just seems like a real "so what?"-kind of deal. It's not like it really transcends the context of "this team is our team's rival, so therefore we will mock them" so it never really seems like it goes beyond anything you'd expect from rival fans, and the whole "they care more about hating the Cubs than their own team" rings about as true as rival fans complaining about there aren't any real Cubs fans and it's just a bunch of tourists and drunks who don't care about baseball. Baseball rivalries are petty things, and hey, good on them for getting a good dig in. Like it was said, I can't wait for the Cubs to finally be in a position to do something similar.

i realize you're talking about the cardinals but anyway

the biggest white sox site that i'm aware of has a subforum completely dedicated to mocking the cubs. and it is reasonably active compared to their main section.

Or they can do both things.

That just seems like a really thing to actually believe; we're Cubs fans, so most of what we're going to hear from rival fans is [expletive]-talking about our team.

well, yeah..."more" excited is probably hyperbole. lots of joy, nevertheless.

White Sox fans are a different beast altogether.

Well, yeah, our teams share the same city. It's going to be even more heated.

I just don't get the perception that it's so lopsided; during my years in Chicago I constantly heard Cubs fans giving that [expletive] as good as they got.

I mean, does anyone REALLY believe there's a serious number of Sox fans who would rather see the Cubs lose than their own team do well?

I got a slight kick out of their crappy start because I haven't understood the high expectations for them, but I don't really care about that team and only their fans to the extent that they can annoy me by being jerks.

Otherwise, all things equal, I'd rather a team from Chicago do well than not (kind of like the Blackhawks), even though I don't really get any joy out of the success either.

Yes. I've heard the logic that they already have their WS, so now they don't want the Cubs to get theirs.

i don't think they need to want the latter more than the former in order for it to be a weird fetish totally out of alignment with typical passionate fandom

I bet if given the choice, they'd take a 2-1 lead over 1-0.

i usually just respond with something to the effect of, "congrats on the world series, i'm happy for you and i hope that i get to know that joy soon. however, let's not pretend like the franchise known for intentionally losing a world series, rioting in their own stadium, wearing shorts during a professional baseball game, and the truly amazing distinction of never making the playoffs two years in a row is god's gift to chicago baseball"

I remember right after they won in 2005, I was watching WGN News and out of two fans they got reactions from during the opening segment, the second said,"I'm just so happy we did it before the cubs."

I had actually rooted for them in that series because of how much I hated those Astro teams and immediately regretted it because of that guy.

I was at the Cubby Bear for the last game. Immediately after the Sox won, I went outside and there was a group of about 40 White Sox fans standing in front of the Wrigley marquee chanting "[expletive] the Cubs!" and "1908"

I mean holy hell, that is how you choose to spend your first few minutes of celebrating the first World Series title of your lifetime?

I could give a rip about the White Sox either way now, but I irrationally hated that 2005 team. I spent a lot of time wondering how the hell they got the rough equivalent of prime-era Pedro Martinez innings out of the trio of Neal Cotts, Cliff Politte and Dustin Hermanson, 2 of which were out of baseball within 2 years.

And, of course, Pierzynski.

The poor bastards were stuck in the pit that is Wrigleyville when their team won; seems like a perfectly appropriate response.

But mostly it comes to dumb fans are loud and dumb. Thinking those types of fan represent most Sox fans is as silly as people assuming that the horrible people in the bleachers represent most Cubs fans.

Plus we're the fans of the terrible team that pretty much everyone gets to pick on because they suck, so there's definitely an inferiority complex thing at play.

I mean...I do not give a [expletive] about the 100 years crap. Before the last 5 years or so of terribleness happened, I hadn't really felt bad (or inferior) about being a Cubs fan at all. Fun place to see games (I know you will hate this), actual major market relevant franchise - any hint of success gets us tons of attention and that's fun too...could be a hell of a lot worse. And it'll be a lot better going forward.

2010-14 was a dark, dark period though.

2010-14 was about as dark as it got. But in the 20 years prior to then there were only 5 or 6 non-shitty seasons.

I guess it depends on the definition of shitty, but in that 20 year span, we only had 6 seasons worse than our best season from '10-'14.

The Sox fans aren't any different than any other team's fans. Being a lifelong Cub fan, it's a really great day when the Cubs win and the Sox lose.

A lot of you probably live in the city, north side, different state or wherever so most of you can't see for yourself how they are or think " No, way it ain't that bad" and think it's all overblown. Unless you live on the south side, then you really can't grasp it. I live in the southwest suburbs and let me tell you, the hatred & caring more about the Cubs is true. I can't count the many times out at bars around the area where a Cubs game is on and Sox fans paying very close attention to it & when the opposing team scores they erupt in cheers and clap loudly. Couple times wearing my Cubs jersey or shirt minding my own business and hear snarky comments like " This is the Southide!" or some other idiotic comment, or questioned why I'm wearing that out here. This is also isn't just friendly heckling. Been told from a couple Sox fans they are born and raised growing up to "HATE the Cubs". Lots of Sox fans wearing Anti-Cubs shirts and even Sox fan license plates that read "IH8Cubs" or something of the sort. So yes, the rage & hatred they have for the Cubs and their fans is true..It's not an overblown perception whatsoever. They have their inferiority complex and basically live to bash anything Cubs related and you hear it more than talk about their own team.

You can replace STL with CHI and Cubs with Cardinals and it works the same. I find it weird on both sides though.
