That pitch was so grooved.

Additionally, look where the second baseman was playing, for a guy with Jeter's opposite field tendencies.

Buck Showalter knows the score.

I can't imagine Buck Showalter would throw away a game just for the Legend of Jeter, but I watched the game on YES and from the shot they showed the 2B was really close to 2B and the SS was not even in the picture which means he was closer to 3B than 2B. Just seems really odd to play Jeter that way and then put a fastball on the outer half...

Edit: To be fair his spray chart is not so exaggerated for

http://www.fangraphs.com/spraycharts.aspx?playerid=826&position=SS&type=battedball

The orioles still had/have a shot for home field, they weren't throwing any games.

It is generally accepted that if you play shifts on defense your pitcher / catcher do not adjust their pitch selection to account for the shifts. The fact that it was a fastball on the outer half has nothing to do with the shift. You pitch the batter as you normally would and assume he will hit to his normal tendencies.

It would have been a nice moment if everything about leading up to it had not been so overblown. Stuff like this article is just madness.

I mean the guy never even won an MVP and now he deserves to be the first unanimous selection to the HOF?

So Phil Hughes had an incentive in his contract where he would get $500k for pitching 210 IP. He pitched 8 innings tonight with only 96 pitches thrown. Predictably the Twins did not have him come back out for the 9th inning, meaning he will likely finish the season with 209.2 IP

Edit: ok I just read that there was an hour rain delay between the 8th and 9th innings. That changes the story from "twins screwed him" to "terrible luck"

The Twins asked Hughes if he wanted to pitch 1/3 of an inning over the weekend to get the incentive, and Hughes declined.

The Deadspin article I read said that if he pitched and walked a batter without striking anyone out, he would lose the record for best K/BB rate ever (min 150 innings).

Then again, he's only walked 16 batters all year, and K/BB isn't exactly as sexy as the HR record.

I'm with you. I don't think they were throwing the game. It just doesn't make much sense to me to play him that way.

well, he should get in unanimously. the problem is he should be far from the first one to get in unanimously.

You might have seen this Derek Jeter photo somewhere on the internet today. Wow, look at all those twos! The baseball gods made it so, #R2p2ct, etc. Unfortunately, it's fake, and the guy who made it feels bad for fooling you.

Derek Jeter's contributions in last night's game were worth .610 WPA...a number that happens to be the highest in any game of his career.

Only seven players in baseball history have played their entire careers for one team and played more games than Jeter. Can anyone name them?

i came up with musial, ripken, and biggio before i got curious and googled it.

Ripken.

Yaz?

Did Cobb play elsewhere?

Carl Yastrzremski played 3308 career games, all with the Red Sox, and that's #1 overall with one team.

Ripken is 3rd at 3001.

Cobb played two seasons with the A's.

Chipper Jones?

Jones played 2499 total games. Jeter is sitting at 2745, presumably he'll get to 2748.

Musial played in 3026 games.

Biggio played in 2850 games (and I don't necessarily remember a year long farewell tour with gifts for Biggio).

I cheated and still only came up with 6.

I found 7.

Carl Yastrzemski - 3308

Stan Musial - 3026

Cal Ripken - 3001

Brooks Robinson - 2896

Robin Yount - 2856

Craig Biggio - 2850

Al Kaline - 2834

Honus Wagner played his first 3 seasons for the Louisville Colonels pre-1900, and then his team basically merged with the Pittsburgh franchise, where he played the rest of his career, but I guess you have to consider that playing for 2 teams, so he doesn't count as an 8th guy.

Pretty sure Biggio announced that he was retiring in like July or August of his final season
